Excerpt from An on Arithmetic, in Theory and Practice: For the Use of Schools IN the present edition a vast number Of exercises have been added, that no rule, however trifling, might be left without so many illustrations as should serve to make it sufficiently familiar to the pupil. And when it was feared that the application of any rule to a particular class Of cases might not at once suggest itself, some question calculated to remove, or diminish the difficulty has been introduced among the examples. A considerable space is devoted to the nature of num bers, and the principles of notation and numeration for the teacher may rest assured, that the facility, and even the success, with which subsequent parts of his instruction will be conveyed to the mind of the learner, depends, in a great degree, upon an adequate acquaintance with them. Hence, to proceed without securing a perfect and practical knowledge of this part of the subject, is to retard, rather than to accelerate improvement. Excerpt from An Elementary Treatise on Arithmetic, in Theory and Practice: Adapted to the Instruction of Youth in Schools and Academies in the United States But here it is to be observed, that the facility with which we can designate the highest numbers, and perform ever arithmetical calculation on them, has occasioned an insenss bility to the enormous magnitude of the numbers of which we speak. One billion is very easily mentioned. And easily designated by a unit followed by nine ciphers thus, The following consideration may, perhaps, assist in enlarging the ideas of the pupil on this subject to count a billion, at one per second, would require nearly thirty-two years. An Algebraic Arithmetic written by S. E. Coleman and has been published by Forgotten Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-11-05 with Mathematics categories.

Excerpt from An Algebraic Arithmetic: An Exposition of the Theory, and Practice of Advanced Arithmetic The introduction of elementary algebra into the schools is of more doubtful value for two principal reasons. The conceptions of geometry can be represented by fig ures and objects, and are therefore readily grasped by the child, but those of algebra can be so represented only to a very limited degree; and, for the most part, are abstractions the nature of which the child comprehends with difficulty. Moreover, the time that can be allotted to the subject in the grammar school is barely sufficient to carry the pupil over the essentially uninteresting details of algebraic manipulation that necessarily precede any but the Simplest applications of the science. But while the wisdom of introducing elementary algebra into the schools may, for these and minor reasons, be seriously questioned, the experience of several years as a teacher has led the author to the conclusion that the application of certain algebraic conceptions to arithmetic would contribute largely toward the rational presentation of the subject, thus increasing its disciplinary value, and at the same time preparing the way for a natural transi tion to the algebra of the high school. These conceptions are the use of letters as the general representatives of (positive) numbers and of the equation to express their relations. First Steps In Arithmetic Classic Reprint written by James Currie and has been published by Forgotten Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-02-10 with Mathematics categories.

Excerpt from First Steps in Arithmetic This treatise of Arithmetic is designed to comprise all that is needed by the pupils of common schools, and by those of higher schools till they have completed their elementary education. It is not one of theory, since the instruction of pupils of their standing must be, in the main, practical; nor, on the other hand, is it a mere collection of examples, since the only practical instruction worthy of the name is that which sets the processes before them in a rational way. It aims throughout at that just combination of theory with practice which is the greatest merit of an elementary text-book. The explanations are given concisely, and in the form in which they are likely to be soonest apprehended by the pupil; whilst the exer cises for practice will be found to be very numerous and carefully graduated.
