The great apparent pre ponderance of German names arises partly from the number of works written on the subject in Germany being very consider able, partly from the bibliographical catalogues of that coun try being more full than those of any other, and partly from the names which seem to be German, really including Danes, Dutch, Belgians, and some Swiss. I am far from thinking that this list contains even the third part of the names of those who have really written on the subject. I have not been particular in searching for any thing after 1750, though I have not refused what came in my way. I might have very much increased the list of recent Germans, from Bogg's Bibliotheca Selecta (tubingen, Looking at the various countries which enjoyed the art of printing from 1500 downwards, I have an impression, from all that I have gathered, which would lead me to suppose that the number of works on arith metic published in Latin, French, German, Dutch, Italian.
