On a cold winter morning, Jeff Power was lighting a fire in his remote Arizona cabin when he heard a noise, grabbed his rifle, and walked out the front door. Someone in the dark shouted, “Throw up your hands!” Shots rang out from inside and outside the cabin, and when it was all over, Jeff’s sons, Tom and John, emerged to find the sheriff and his two deputies dead, and their father mortally wounded. Arizona’s deadliest shoot-out happened not in 1881, but in 1918 as the United States plunged into World War I, and not in Tombstone, but in a remote canyon in the Galiuro Mountains northeast of Tucson. Whereas previous accounts have portrayed the gun battle as a quintessential western feud, historian Heidi J. Osselaer explodes that myth and demonstrates how the national debate over U.S. entry into the First World War divided society at its farthest edges, creating the political and social climate that lead to this tragedy. A vivid, thoroughly researched account, Arizona’s Deadliest Gunfight describes an impoverished family that wanted nothing to do with modern civilization. Jeff Power had built his cabin miles from the nearest settlement, yet he could not escape the federal government’s expanding reach. The Power men were far from violent criminals, but Jeff had openly criticized the Great War, and his sons had failed to register for the draft. To separate fact from dozens of false leads and conspiracy theories, Osselaer traced the Power family’s roots back several generations, interviewed descendants of the shoot-out’s participants, and uncovered previously unknown records. What happened to Tom and John Power afterward is as stirring and tragic a story as the gunfight itself. Weaving together a family-based local history with national themes of wartime social discord, rural poverty, and dissent, Arizona’s Deadliest Gunfight will be the authoritative account of the 1918 incident and the memorable events that unfolded in its wake.

And Die In The West written by Paula Mitchell Marks and has been published by University of Oklahoma Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1996 with Social Science categories.

The gunfight at the O.K. Corral has excited the imaginations of Western enthusiasts ever since that chilly October afternoon in 1881 when Doc Holliday and the three fighting Earps strode along a Tombstone, Arizona, street to confront the Clanton and McLaury brothers. When they met, Billy Clanton and the two McLaurys were shot to death; the popular image of the Wild West was reinforced; and fuel was provided for countless arguments over the characters, motives, and actions of those involved. And Die in the West presents the first fully detailed, objective narrative of the celebrated gunfight, of the tensions leading up to it, and the bitter, bloody events that followed. Paula Mitchell Marks places the events surrounding the gunfight against a larger backdrop of a booming Tombstone and the fluid, frontier environment of greed, factions and violence. In the process, Marks strips away many of the myths associated with the famous gunfight and of the West in general.

In the early hours of February 10, 1918, a posse surrounded the Power family's small cabin in the remote Galiuro Mountains of southeastern Arizona. A gun battle ensued, and in it four men lost their lives. Their deaths precipitated not only the most intensive man hunt in the history of Arizona, but also a bitter controversy that has persisted into the present, a controversy that continues to be waged in the most frequently recounted historical legend of the area. In the early 1960's, Roderick Roberts learned of the story of “The Powers Boys” and began to collect information about it from local residents. As he wrote:…I encountered some informants who would tell the tale but not allow it to be recorded, and others who were so disturbed by the mention of it that they would abruptly conclude the interview. These extreme reactions to an “old story” seemed to reflect tensions that I had begun to feel in the community, and I speculated that the tale might provide insights into these tensions. As he examined the documentary evidence and recorded oral testimonies about the events and the protagonists, another aspect presented itself:When it became apparent that the version told by non-Mormon Anglos was almost always favorable to the Powers, that the version told by Mormons was almost always hostile to the Powers, and that most Mexican versions had other concerns, I knew that I had stumbled upon a narrative that had a deep significance to the community in which it circulated. I also realized that in this body of tales I was presented with a splendid opportunity to observe a legend shortly after its nascence and to learn something of the ways in which an historical incident can be molded to reflect the biases of a given group and to ease the tensions to which that group is subject. The fact that the version of the story favorable to the Power boys gained sufficient currency to first bring about their parole and then their pardon without the introduction of any new evidence suggested the possibility of studying at first hand one of the functions of the historical legend. The book includes original newspaper accounts and the texts provided by the residents who were interviewed. Roderick Roberts' analysis of the situation in Graham County, Arizona, in the early 1960's and his discussion of the definition and historicity of legend provide a fascinating source of information for folklorists, historians, sociologists, and other scholars. And any reader interested in the American Southwest will be intrigued by the story of the tragic shoot-out, the events that led up to it, and the effect it had on the community.
