The dangerous, decades-long arms race between the United States and the Soviet Union during the Cold War begged a fundamental question: how did these superpowers actually plan to survive a nuclear strike? In Armageddon Insurance, the first historical account of Soviet civil defense and a pioneering reappraisal of its American counterpart, Edward M. Geist compares how the two superpowers tried, and mostly failed, to reinforce their societies to withstand the ultimate catastrophe. Drawing on previously unexamined documents from archives in America, Russia, and Ukraine, Geist places these civil defense programs in their political and cultural contexts, demonstrating how each country's efforts reflected its cultural preoccupations and blind spots and revealing how American and Soviet civil defense related to profound issues of nuclear strategy and national values. This work challenges prevailing historical assumptions and unearths the ways Moscow and Washington developed nuclear weapons policies based not on rational strategic or technical considerations but in power struggles between different institutions pursuing their own narrow self-interests.

THE RINGS OF ARMAGEDDON From the dry mesa's of Los Alamos to the dangerous mountains along the Afghan-Pakistan border, The Rings of Armageddon is a fast paced thriller from the author of the Phoenix Year. Secrets from the past must remain hidden if General Helmut Reinhardt the soon to retire Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, winner of two Congressional Medals of Honors for daring rescues in the Afghanistan and Iraq Wars, is to become the next President of the United States. Deeply buried in his command biography is his four years leading the American mission to the Afghan Mujahedeen where he worked closely with the future leader of Al Qaeda and the Taliban? The second secret is far more dangerous to the stability of the world system of nuclear deterrence. Just after 2001 he was asked by the new administration to develop an ultra-secret weapons system, NorthStar, a polar orbiting stealth satellite with 50 nuclear weapons with the command and control in a portable computer terminal. After the Secretary of Defense realized the mistake he'd made in approving NorthStar, and the danger that NorthStar represented, he ordered the console placed in the JCS vault at the National Military Command Center at the Pentagon and the nine rings needed to initiate a launch distributed to the only nine men who knew the true purpose of the NorthStar system. Now, more than ten years later, questions are being asked about Project NorthStar that General Reinhardt can't afford to answer. Reinhardt also discovers that a few of the scientists who worked on the development of the system are beginning to talk openly, he acts to silence them and gather up the rings and the console as insurance for some future emergency. When Ali Hassan, Qatari banker, secret financier of terrorists groups and long-time friend of the General, learns of NorthStar and the likelihood that his old comrade from their days working closely together in Afghanistan may be the key to turning Al Qaeda into a nuclear power, he develops a plan to force the General to bring the terminal to him in their old camp high in the mountains of Eastern Afghanistan. Ali Hassan gathers leaders from more than twenty major terrorist groups together to witness the handover of the NorthStar terminal to his control; he makes an ultimatum to the United States demanding a complete withdrawal from the Middle East. To demonstrate his resolve, he starts a countdown launching a warhead against a target somewhere in the United States. As the countdown clock ticks towards zero, broadcast live to the world, the President of the United States must decide if General Reinhardt is a traitor or possibly, just possibly, a hero.

Dr. Steven Collins has devoted his life to one cause: finding a way to prevent a catastrophic collision between Earth and an asteroid, like the one that killed off the dinosaurs millions of years ago. Collins spends years developing a shield-a device that uses the Earth's own magnetic field-and finally reaches the point where he is ready to test it. But when Collins turns on his creation, he rips open a hole in time and space itself that hurls him forward in time, where he discovers to his horror that the device he created has caused the very global Armageddon he was trying to prevent. Collins now must try to undo the damage he has done as best he can. But the few surviving members of the human race are slowly dying off, a century of living under the shield taking its toll, and they cannot leave the planet to try to build a new civilization elsewhere. For just beyond the shield lurks a madman who seeks to dominate the human race or exterminate it.

How did the United States move from position of nuclear superiority over the Soviet Union at the beginning of the 1960s to a period of arms control based on nuclear parity the doctrine of mutual assured destruction in 1972? Drawing on declassified records of conversations between three presidents and their most trusted advisors, this book provides a new and fascinating answer to this question. John F. Kennedy, Lyndon Johnson, and Richard Nixon struggled to reconcile their own personal convictions on the nuclear arms race with the very different views of the public and Congress. In doing so they engaged in a double game, hiding their true beliefs behind a facade of strategic language while grappling in private with the complex realities of the nuclear age. The book shows how Kennedy and Johnson consistently worried about the domestic political costs of their actions, pushing ahead with an anti-ballistic missile (ABM) system for the United States for fear of the domestic political consequences of scrapping both the system and the doctrine of strategic superiority on which it was based. By contrast, the abrupt change in U.S. public and congressional opinion in 1969 forced Nixon to give up America's first ABM and the U. S. lead in offensive ballistic missiles through agreements with the Soviet Union, despite his conviction that the U.S. needed a nuclear edge over the USSR to maintain the security of the West. By placing this dynamic at the center of the story, the book provides a completely new overarching interpretation of this pivotal period in the development of U.S. nuclear policy.
