The Portuguese encounter with the peoples of South Asia and Brazil set foundational precedents for European imperialism. Jesuit missionaries were key participants in both regions. As they sought to reconcile three commitments—to local missionary spaces, to a universal Church, and to the global Portuguese empire—the Jesuits forged a religious vision of empire. Ananya Chakravarti explores both indigenous and European experiences to show how these missionaries learned to negotiate everything with the diverse peoples they encountered and that nothing could simply be imposed. Yet Jesuits repeatedly wrote home in language celebrating triumphal impositions of European ideas and practices upon indigenous people. In the process, while empire was built through distinctly ambiguous interactions, Europeans came to imagine themselves in imperial moulds. In this dynamic, in which the difficult lessons of empire came to be learned and forgotten repeatedly, Chakravarti demonstrates an enduring and overlooked characteristic of European imperialism.

A comprehensive study of the New Christian elite of Jewish origin—prominent traders, merchants, bankers and men of letters—between the fifteenth and eighteenth centuries In Strangers Within, Francisco Bethencourt provides the first comprehensive history of New Christians, the descendants of Jews forced to convert to Catholicism in late medieval Spain and Portugal. Bethencourt estimates that there were around 260,000 New Christians by 1500—more than half of Iberia’s urban population. The majority stayed in Iberia but a significant number moved throughout Europe, Africa, the Middle East, coastal Asia and the New World. They established Sephardic communities in North Africa, the Ottoman Empire, Italy, Amsterdam, Hamburg and London. Bethencourt focuses on the elite of bankers, financiers and merchants from the fifteenth to the eighteenth centuries and the crucial role of this group in global trade and financial services. He analyses their impact on religion (for example, Teresa de Ávila), legal and political thought (Las Casas), science (Amatus Lusitanus), philosophy (Spinoza) and literature (Enríquez Gomez). Drawing on groundbreaking research in eighteen archives and library manuscript departments in six different countries, Bethencourt argues that the liminal position in which the New Christians found themselves explains their rise, economic prowess and cultural innovation. The New Christians created the first coherent legal case against the discrimination of a minority singled out for systematic judicial inquiry. Cumulative inquisitorial prosecution, coupled with structural changes in international trade, led to their decline and disappearance as a recognizable ethnicity by the mid-eighteenth century. Strangers Within tells an epic story of persecution, resistance and the making of Iberia through the oppression of one of the most powerful minorities in world history. Packed with genealogical information about families, their intercontinental networks, their power and their suffering, it is a landmark study.

Aparte de algunas aportaciones muy concretas a la historia de las formas métricas y la novedad en el planteamiento de un tipo de análisis del ritmo que como planteamiento general sigue vivo en el estudio del verso, la obra de Masdeu tiene la importancia de ser el primer tratado completo sobre versificación que se escribe en España en muchos años, desde el siglo XVII. La estructura de la obra obedece a la lógica de proporcionar, después de definir la poesía, los elementos necesarios para la adquisición del oficio de poeta, desde el conocimiento de la lengua al de los mitos y temas literarios. El índice de los temas de los nueve diálogos entre Metrófilo ("el amante del metro") y Sofronia ("la discreta") ilustra esta organización: la naturaleza y utilidad de la poesía (la verosimilitud), el arte de escribir y leer bien, la descripción de las clases de versos por su número de sílabas y lugar de los acentos, la rima, las clases de estrofas, el estudio del poema (poesías cortas: la lírica; y poesías largas: épica y teatro), el lenguaje poético. En definitiva, la obra de Masdeu es una poética en la que la métrica desempeña un papel preponderante.
