When Armley Gaol was built in 1847 it was intended to be one of the most modern and progressive prisons of its kind. Yet within its walls men, women and children as young as eight were kept in virtual solitary confinement for their entire sentences. Inmates were frequently given pointless hard labour punishments, such as turning the crank, and hours spent on the treadmill. But the worst part was those prisoners found guilty of violent assaults and murder who were subject to harsh floggings, or worse still execution. Within its walls prison officers dealt with recalcitrant prisoners and inmate violence. Prison surgeons had to deal with the reality of disease and poverty, often from inmates just arriving. The prison chaplains did their best for those in their care but it is no wonder many took the chance to escape or commit suicide rather than serve out their sentences, within its walls.Reading this account of Life and Death in Armley Gaol, will highlight some of the grisly details of prison life. In the end you will be thankful you are just visiting.

The true crimes of one of nineteenth century England’s most notorious thieves and killers, whose exploits still capture the public’s imagination. Once immortalized in Madame Tussauds’s Chamber of Horrors, and brought to life in two silent films, his gnarled and prematurely aged features would be the last image his victims ever saw, yet ironically, he was known by the name of Peace. A grotesque figure who took on many names and many faces, he could slip into the home of an unsuspecting family with the silent stealth of a cool night time breeze, and leave without a trace. Spending his nocturnal hours limping through the dirty streets with villainy on his mind, and impishly disappearing into the industrial smoke that hung over Victorian Sheffield like a perpetual storm cloud, this devil wrote his own place in the folklore of his hometown. Committing one gruesome crime after the next, he was the most wanted man in England for a time. Tales of burglary, murder, daring escapes, and a truly shocking miscarriage of justice feature in Charlie Peace along with moments of lost love, damaged pride, and violent revenge. Ben W. Johnson’s biography tells the chilling story of a man who turned to crime through necessity, but consciously chose to continue in an ever spiraling life of wickedness.

This chilling compendium of historic crimes features 28 cases that shocked the nation during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Among the cases featured here are the shooting of Bessie Cross, after she fell pregnant while her husband was away serving his country in 1917, and the 1869 murders of Maria Death and her alleged lover by Maria's partner, Frederick Hinson. It also recalls the tragic stories of Elvira Barney and Ruth Ellis, who shot and killed their lovers in 1932 and 1955 respectively, with very different consequences. Along with the most notorious cases, this book also features many that did not make national headlines, examining not only the methods and motives but also the real stories of the perpetrators and their victims. Discover the darker history of this South Yorkshire town with these true crime stories and photos. This book takes you on a journey into England’s past, and into the gritty industrial town of Barnsley. With a variety of true-crime tales, it reveals not only the poverty and squalor in which many people of the time lived, but also the deep-rooted prejudices and double standards of the period. The crimes covered include poaching in the local area, a serious poisoning of bread and butter pudding at an eating house, and the tragic story of a man who was poisoned for a joke. More sinister happenings include a case of body snatching, which brought the whole town of Barnsley to a state of complete panic, the distressing murder of a child, a brutal attack on an elderly lady, and a woman who was shot down in the street by her former marine boyfriend. These macabre tales reveal a side of Barnsley that is not visible in the modern town of today. The intriguing narrative and in-depth coverage of Barnsley’s criminal past makes compelling reading for those interested in both British history and the darker side of human nature.
