Seven decades after World War II, we now know that the margin between Allied victory and defeat was often narrower than many realized. The decisive actions of leaders, generals and war heroes have been well documented, but less well known are the technological developments that made victory possible and laid the groundwork for postwar progress. Based on more than ten years of research, this book describes how American airmen became the best-outfitted aviators of the war, tracing the development of virtually every piece of personal equipment used by United States air forces. Drawing on original sources including formerly classified documents, the author details the myriad types of respirator equipment, parachutes, body armor, pressure suits and other flying and survival gear that were instrumental in making U.S. pilots and air crews effective. Personal anecdotes bring to life the design and testing of combat flight equipment. More than 160 photographs are included, most published here for the first time.

Airmen Against The Sea is the fourth in a series of ADTIC studies to determine how military personnel survived under meegency conditions in variaous parts of the world. Its predecessors, 999 Survived, Sun, Sand and Survival, and Down In the North, dealt with survival respectively in the Southwest pacific Tropics, in ther African Deserts, and in the Arctic. This study concerns survival at sea dn, like its predecessors, employs the topical approach. It is not a water survival manual, but is a factual report of what happened to men who bailed out or ditched at sea, and whose only refuge for days on end was a rubber lifeaft. Under such topical headings as bailout versus ditching, survival equipment, the lifeaft, food, hazards, injuries, morale, and many others, the experiences of the survivors themselves are emphasized. The result is a new and fresh insight into the problems of survival at sea which will eb of inteest to all those wh ofly over water, and of particular value to those concerned directly with rescue operations, with water survival training, and with the development of survival materiel.

This monograph recounts the development of air doctrine in the Army air arm from 1917 to 1941. It includes concepts, both strategic and tactical, that emerged during World War I and the period following, up to the entry of the United States into World War II. The study is based primarily on official Air Force records and upon interviews with officers of the air arm who have been especially associated with air doctrine. When the debacle at Pearl Harbor thrust the United States into a war for survival, the nation marshalled its forces on land and sea and in the air. And although land, sea, and air forces all played vital roles in securing the triumph, the part of the air arm was unique. For the first time in the history of war, airpower was employed as a major striking force, drastically altering the course and nature of the struggle and decisively influencing the outcome.
