A History Of The Treatment Of Renal Failure By Dialysis written by J Stewart Cameron and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2002-07-18 with Medical categories.
This book tells the extraordinary story of how the function of the first - and so far almost the only - human organ was replaced by a machine, and the "artificial kidney" entered medical and public folk-lore. A practical artificial kidney, or dialyser, came about by advances in science followed by the acquisition of new synthetic materials which made the application of these ideas possible. However it was the dedication and persistence of a number of talented pioneers who pressed ahead against professional opposition to achieve success, first in the treatment of temporary, recoverable kidney failure, and then permanent renal shut-down which made it a success. The apparent high cost and limited availability of this form of treatment immediately raised ethical questions which had never been questioned before, centering around equity of access to treatment, when and if treatment could be denied, and - worst of all - the agonising decision of when, once established, it should be stopped. Spiralling costs as the true number of people with kidney failure became evident raised major political and financial questions, which were addressed in different countries in different ways which reflected - but also helped change - patterns of how medical care is provided. In developed countries, the problem could be solved by allocating a disproportionate amount of money to the treatment of relatively few kidney patients, but in the developing world the cost of treatment still limits its availability, as it does all forms of modern health care. Nevertheless, today almost one million people world-wide are maintained alive following terminal kidney failure, two thirds of them by various forms of dialysis and the remainder bearing kidney transplants, almost always placed after a period on dialysis. The story is also the sum of the often heroic lives of these hundreds of thousands of patients, a few of whom have today been maintained alive and active for more than 35 years, and many of whom suffered known, but also unexpected complications as a result of their treatment.

A doctor shares her unforgettable love story & informative journey into the world of medicine in this “thoughtful and endearing” memoir (Washington Post). When Vanessa met Robert, she had no idea that their relationship would thoroughly transform her life. Robert was suffering from end-stage kidney disease, which required him to endure years of debilitating dialysis in order to stay alive, at least until his failed organ could be replaced by a kidney transplant. Although Vanessa was a primary care doctor, she developed a deeper understanding of the difficulties Robert faced, including dialysis and finding a donor. So, even though they were still in the early stages of their relationship, she volunteered one of her own kidneys for testing and discovered that she was a match. This life-affirming donation forged a bond that would become a pillar of Vanessa and Robert’s marriage—and the beginning of a new career. Motivated by Robert’s experience and her newfound knowledge, Vanessa became a nephrologist—a kidney doctor—and discovered far more about the realities of the specialty. Shaped by Vanessa’s remarkable expertise as a doctor, a woman of color, a mother, and a kidney donor, Hundreds of Interlaced Fingers is a love story as well as an informative guide to kidney disease. Praise for Hundreds of Interlaced Fingers “A story told beautifully, courageously, and honestly. You’ll never forget Vanessa and Robert, and you’ll never view medicine quite the same way again.” —Robert Winchester, MD, author of the New York Times–bestseller The Digital Doctor “Intense, ambitious, and fascinating.” —Victoria Sweet, MD, award–winning author of God’s Hotel

Did you know that 400 medical doctors commit suicide each year in the USA? That is about the size of two whole medical school classes. This autobiography tells the intricate and personal story one doctor's path through medical school and out into academia, specialty medicine, and practice, having to conform to the system's standards. Like many doctors, she was on the way to becoming one of the walking dead. Then, one day she realized that policy was harming her patients, and she took a stand. This resulted in hostility and ostracism by the authorities and her peers in the system. In 2011, depressed and deflated, life was difficult in all directions . . . until she found peace through an unexpected path and a new friend. The co-author of Dissolving Illusions: Disease, Vaccines, and the Forgotten History brings you her entertaining autobiography, which will surprise you and have you wondering if your own doctor could be inadvertently threatening your health.

The buttonhole method for the cannulation of the arteriovenous fistula was discovered more than 40 years ago and was soon adopted on a wide scale due to its obvious benefits of decreased puncture pain and extension of the life of the arteriovenous fistula. Following reports of complications such as a higher incidence of access-related infections, the method has lately been the subject of intense scrutiny; recent research has focused on the mechanisms of buttonhole access-related infections and newer techniques that may have bearing on the future use of the buttonhole method. This book presents an easily accessible overview of information relevant to the subject, including history, benefits and the latest research results related to the buttonhole cannulation method. It aims to rekindle an awareness of the advantages of this method and to encourage a critical analysis of possible techniques to overcome current barriers that prevent a wider spread of the technique.

Reconstructing the history of nephrology is not an easy task: It requires a great deal of effort and interest on the part of the researcher, who has to explore information on diseases of the kidney in various medical texts of the past, where it has sometimes been buried for centuries. This volume of 'History of Nephrology' thus concentrates on the history of diseases of the kidney. Physicians have toiled in diagnosing and treating ailments of the kidney for millennia, well before the emergence of the specialty of nephrology. It is also evident that many of the best minds in medicine, when faced with the complex signs and symptoms we now classify as diseases of the kidney, were initially puzzled by them and then satisfied by merely describing them. While the thriving of anatomy allowed of some of these clinical manifestations to be attributed to pathologies of the kidney observed at autopsy, it was only after the Scientific Revolution and during the era of Enlightenment that most of these descriptive entities came to be grouped under the taxonomic terms by which any medical student today can make a specific diagnosis of kidney disease. Their treatment, however, whether symptomatic or curative, had to await the post World War II period of flourishing basic research. Nephrologists as well as those interested in the history of medicine in general will find this book a veritable treasure trove of information.

Beans signify the human kidneys. My professional development through advancing my understanding of Nephrology has allowed me to showcase my ability to serve those who are in need. This becomes my MEANS to achieve success on a job I learned to love and helped me appreciate the things I didn't in the past and things I have shared with people who benefited from my experience. A job that means so much to me and with a significant impact personally for me and my wife. It means bringing joy to our household, to procure the essentials on the table, and to see it as a reason why I have given up the supplementary idea of laboring more hours to live the most comfortable life but rather find solace and peace to see my effort done things I could never imagine. Dialysis Nursing is my calling, GOD has called me indeed, to foster the passion that lives in me. Someday I can say that I have fulfilled my dreams because of the “Beans” that give me the “Means” to sustainability. The life in a world where I matter and have made a difference on the lives of others.
