Archaeologies of Early Modern Spanish Colonialism illustrates how archaeology contributes to the knowledge of early modern Spanish colonialism and the "first globalization" of the 16th and 17th centuries. Through a range of specific case studies, this book offers a global comparative perspective on colonial processes and colonial situations, and the ways in which they were experienced by the different peoples. But we also focus on marginal “unsuccessful” colonial episodes. Thus, some of the papers deal with very brief colonial events, even “marginal” in some cases, considered “failures” by the Spanish crown or even undertook without their consent. These short events are usually overlooked by traditional historiography, which is why archaeological research is particularly important in these cases, since archaeological remains may be the only type of evidence that stands as proof of these colonial events. At the same time, it critically examines the construction of categories and discourses of colonialism, and questions the ideological underpinnings of the source material required to address such a vast issue. Accordingly, the book strikes a balance between theoretical, methodological and empirical issues, integrated to a lesser or greater extent in most of the chapters.

En los años 60 se definía una disciplina científica, la "Arqueología industrial" cuya finalidad "es el descubrimiento, la catalogación y el estudio de los restos físicos del pasado industrial para conocer a través de ellos aspectos de las condiciones del trabajo, de los procesos técnicos y de los procesos productivos". La nueva disciplina adopta la metodología de la Arqueología para investigar, analizar, interpretar, registrar y preservar los restos industriales. Se entiende como industrial toda actividad productiva cuyos vestigios materiales consisten en edificios, instalaciones, maquinaria e infraestructuras.Esos elementos no se estudian aisladamente sino, según el método arqueológico, en su contexto que constituye la estructura histórica de un territorio, una estructura social, un determinado proceso de producción, un concreto sistema tecnológico. La Arqueología industrial había de darnos una visión amplia y totalizadora de la industrialización o la era mecánica de la producción capitalista, de sus significados y sus consecuencias. Con ella se establecía "una determinada organización de la producción y una complejidad tecnológica creciente, surgía un nuevo tipo de fábrica y de vivienda, se definía el "edifico funcional". Se había llevado a cabo la gran transformación de la imagen de las ciudades con la instalación de las nuevas actividades y la construcción en gran extensión de vivienda obrera en la periferia de la ciudad burguesa
