El presente volumen refleja una teoría de la arquitectura y una metodología historiográfica dirigida a los estudiantes y a todos aquellos que se acercan por vez primera a la historia de la arquitectura de nuestro tiempo, es decir, desde la segunda mitad del siglo XIX hasta hoy; así pues, su objetivo es casi exclusivamente didáctico. El principio historiográfico no es ni más ni menos que el de la contemporaneidad de la historia, por lo que nos ocupamos de la historia desde una postura crítica actual, y porque apreciamos en ella valores e intereses que responden a las exigencias prácticas de hoy. La intención operativa está íntimamente ligada a dicho principio: estudiamos la historia de la arquitectura contemporánea (y la del pasado reciente y remoto) a través del entendimiento crítico de la situación actual, para enriquecer el conocimiento analítico de las obras que se van produciendo continuamente y para identificar un código, un lenguaje arquitectónico adaptable, también, a los edificios que estamos proyectando.

Es una evidencia incuestionable que las transformaciones sufridas en todos los territorios de la humanidad desde el pasado siglo y en los últimos tiempos han sido de tal importancia y trascendencia que han cambiado de una manera decisiva la forma de entender este mundo, y por tanto, y obviamente, la arquitectura tampoco se ha librado de estas convulsiones. Como quiera que siempre se ha entendido la arquitectura como un arte del espacio, así como la música ha sido considerada arte del tiempo, es precisamente esta condición esencial de nuestra disciplina la que se ha visto más pro- fundamente transformada. Hoy la comunidad científica asume sin reparos que el tiempo y el espacio no son magnitudes independientes y absolutas, como establecía el paradigma Newton-Kantiano, sino variables de una nueva entidad de cuatro dimensiones denominada como continuo espacio-temporal. La primera conclusión que podríamos deducir de manera inmediata es que la herramienta tradicional del control de la forma arquitectónica, es decir, la Geometría, ya no puede mantenerse por más tiempo en el aparentemente tranquilo territorio de la tridimensionalidad euclidiana. Parece, pues, conveniente incorporar al utillaje analítico y crítico nuevos y potentes recursos instrumentales de la disciplina que tienen sus antecedentes en el siglo XIX y han sido ya verificados experimentalmente y exhaustivamente durante todo el siglo pasado y siguen en vigor, con un éxito sin precedentes, hasta nuestros días.
