El contenido del presente volumen atiende a la plaza Mayor y su entorno arquitectónico. De todo el conjunto barroco de la ciudad, hemos decidido segregar el sector para prestarle la atención debida del centro histórico que es la plaza Mayor. De compleja evolución, conoce su momento culminante en lo monumental a lo largo del siglo XVIII. Era por entonces el conjunto barroco por excelencia de Cuenca. Le daban su significado, y en buena medida se lo siguen dando, tres importantes monumentos y sus correspondientes fachadas: la catedral, las casas consistoriales y el convento de San Pedro de las Justinianas. La imagen más potente la ofrecía sin duda el antiguo hastial catedralicio y la vecina torre de campanas o Giraldo, aunque es de lamentar la pérdida de todo ello y de la propia unidad dieciochesca de la plaza. La fábrica de las nuevas casas consistoriales cerraba la explanada por el sur, en un teatral efecto genuinamente barroco. Por último, el convento de las Petras alzaba su masa con una fachada entonces más barroquizante, por la pintura, de lo que ahora muestra. El proyecto Cuenca, ciudad barroca, nace en favor del conocimiento y difusión de las arquitecturas barrocas conquenses y de sus valores patrimoniales. Estas arquitecturas son, al cabo, las que más abundan en Cuenca y, paradójicamente, las que menos se ven y se visitan. Pero enseñar a ver no tendría sentido sin un soporte científico que lo respalde. La búsqueda del rigor y la puesta al día de los conocimientos resulta un requisito ineludible. Los objetivos son analizar y difundir el conjunto arquitectónico global de los siglos XVII y XVIII, tanto religioso como civil, según la información consolidada del pasado y la que podemos aportar ahora. La educación de la mirada resulta imprescindible en dos direcciones complementarias: para que el público llegue a apreciar en su justo valor el acervo arquitectónico que la ciudad posee y para que ese legado reciba los cuidados de protección y valorización que merece.

El compuesto edificado conocido universalmente como casas Colgadas de Cuenca, constituye una de las arquitecturas más singulares que puedan encontrarse en el patrimonio histórico de la vieja Europa. Inmuebles modestos en sí mismos, su nombre y su imagen han traspasado las fronteras en mayor grado que otros monumentos de carácter civil mucho más artísticos, monumentales y refinados. Su historia, en camino ya de ser seis veces centenaria, las ha conducido, en un fascinante proceso, desde su primera condición de arquitectura doméstica a convertirse en un icono urbano con proyección internacional y, finalmente, en un emblema de absoluta modernidad vinculado con el Museo de Arte Abstracto Español. Todo ello se ha producido en progresivas metamorfosis que han ido transformando su aspecto, pero sin menoscabar en grado alguno su potencia como imagen icónica de una antigua ciudad. Son como el Ave Fénix de la construcción popular, que renace una y otra vez de sus voladizos hundidos y de sus tabiques desmoronados. Glosando la célebre frase de Raúl Glaber, cronista francés del siglo XI, podría decirse que las casas Colgadas, en más de una ocasión, se han despojado de sus viejos harapos para revestirse de un blanco manto de yeso y madera que las ha concedido nueva vida.
