The global spread of uniform modes of production and cultural values has been accompanied by a dissemination of stereotypes of "modern" architecture styles almost everywhere around the globe. Paradoxically, the reverse process has also emerged: In some countries, the elites feel the necessity to counterbalance the "loss of identity" and defend their own cultures against the "intruding" forces of globalization. What started as a defensive notion has developed into a more progressive attempt to re-create what has allegedly been lost. This trend is being strongly expressed in discourses about architecture in countries of the South. Who are the actors feeling compelled to "construct" new identities? How are these new identities in architecture created in various parts of the world? And, which are the ingredients borrowed from various historical and ethnic traditions and other sources? Brasilia, Caracas, Mexico City, Rio de Janeiro ... these are cities synonymous with some of the most innovative and progressive architecture of the twentieth century. The period between 1930 and 1960 in particular, when many Latin American economies expanded rapidly, was an era of incomparable inventiveness and creative production, as the various governments strove to shake off their colonial pasts and make public their modernising intentions. This book focuses on major state-funded architectural projects, featuring not only the high-profile prestigious building like the House of Representatives in Barsilia but also social architecture such as schools and los-cost housing developments. Architects like Pani, Costa, Reidy and Niemeyer, who undertook this work with considerable autonomy and significant financial resources, in effect became social planners, their avant-garde aesthetic and technical experimentation often being teamed with radical social agendas. By 1960, the year in which Brasilia was inaugurated, economic growth in the region was slowing and faith in the modernist project in general was faltering. The English-speaking world, which had previously endorsed and even envied Latin American architectural production, changed its opinion and largely dismissed it from the history of twentieth-century architecture. Building the New World redresses the balance. It provides an accessible introduction to the most important examples of state-funded modernism in Latin America during a period of almost unimaginable optimism, when politicians and architects saw architecture as, literally, a way of building themselves out of underdevelopment and into the new world of a culturally rich and socially inclusive future .

En los años 30 en Cali empezó una verdadera carrera urbanizadora más allá de sus viejos límites, al tiempo que se realizaban una serie de obras importantes para la celebración de sus cuatrocientos años. El tratado de nuevas avenidas, la construcción de un bosque municipal, la configuración definitiva de los espacios alrededor del río, la arborización de las calles, la construcción de monumentos, la restauración de la Torre Mudéjar, la construcción de escuelas, hospicios, etc., fueron entre muchas, las tareas adelantadas o al menos propuestas, en 1936. La arquitectura residencial y de muchos edificios públicos obedeció a un gusto que se inclinó por algunas premisas funcionales modernas (en la organización no-tipológica de los espacios), compositivas (como la descomposición del volumen), urbanas (casas aisladas en medio de jardines) y técnicas de la arquitectura moderna, pero incorporando techos de teja, columnas y dinteles en piedra, arcadas, balcones y porches, cuidadosa cerrajería, elaborada carpintería, acabados rugosos en paredes, etc. Para muchos, la arquitectura residencial de estos años y el urbanismo que lo acompañó, constituyó la más amable imagen de la ciudad pues fueron sensibles a la topografía, al paisaje y el clima de Cali: cuando los barrios incluyeron calles arborizadas, patios y antejardines, y el trazado vial según los caprichos de la geografía. La demanda de este tipo de arquitectura y su relación con la naturaleza fué tan intensa que se mantuvo hasta bien entrados los años 50, obligando incluso a los más radicales promotores de la arquitectura moderna a realizar proyectos de este tipo. En Cali todas estas arquitecturas suelen ser conocidas hoy como estilo español californiano, una de las versiones del amplio movimiento que constituyeron las arquitecturas neo-coloniales que se manifestaron, con variaciones formales distintas referencias, desde Argentina y Chile hasta California y Florida, en Estados Unidos. Verdadera alternativa al eclecticismo académico europeo, nacida de un espíritu americanista que recorrió toda Latinoamérica, las arquitecturas neocoloniales fueron un campo de creación intenso, de interpretación de las peculiaridades regionales (culturales y materiales, técnicas y ambientales) y durante un muy buen tiempo, trascendieron su contexto de origen y se convirtieron en una opción distinta la arquitectura internacionalista del Movimiento Moderno, pues respondían a expectativas de tipo cultural-regional a las que esté, en un principio, no proveía respuestas.

In February and March 2008, the International Program and the Department of Architecture and Design at The Museum of Modern Art organised the Museum's first symposium on the modernist architecture of the Caribbean and bordering Latin American countries, in collaboration with the Caribbean School of Architecture at the University of Technology, Kingston, Jamaica. The goal was to encourage scholarly, curatorial and broader educational awareness. Topics covered included regional and international legacies, preservation, environmental sustainability and urban planning, as they relate to modernist architectural history and contemporary practice. The presenters were leading architects and architectural historians from the region, and attendees included their colleagues as well as local and international university students, policy makers, civic leaders and developers from Jamaica, the surrounding Caribbean isalnds and the United States. This illustrated volume, co-published by MoMA and Archivos de Arquitectura Antillana (AAA), an architectural journal based in the Dominican Republic, presents the papers from this critical symposium in both English and Spanish, making them accessible to a broader public.

The period following the Mexican Revolution was characterized by unprecedented artistic experimentation. Seeking to express the revolution's heterogeneous social and political aims, which were in a continuous state of redefinition, architects, artists, writers, and intellectuals created distinctive, sometimes idiosyncratic theories and works. Luis E. Carranza examines the interdependence of modern architecture in Mexico and the pressing sociopolitical and ideological issues of this period, as well as the interchanges between post-revolutionary architects and the literary, philosophical, and artistic avant-gardes. Organizing his book around chronological case studies that show how architectural theory and production reflected various understandings of the revolution's significance, Carranza focuses on architecture and its relationship to the philosophical and pedagogic requirements of the muralist movement, the development of the avant-garde in Mexico and its notions of the Mexican city, the use of pre-Hispanic architectural forms to address indigenous peoples, the development of a socially oriented architectural functionalism, and the monumentalization of the revolution itself. In addition, the book also covers important architects and artists who have been marginally discussed within architectural and art historiography. Richly illustrated, Architecture as Revolution is one of the first books in English to present a social and cultural history of early twentieth-century Mexican architecture.

This volume examines the unprecedented growth of several cities in Latin America from 1830 to 1930, observing how sociopolitical changes and upheavals created the conditions for the birth of the metropolis. In the century between 1830 and 1930, following independence from Spain and Portugal, major cities in Latin America experienced large-scale growth, with the development of a new urban bourgeois elite interested in projects of modernization and rapid industrialization. At the same time, the lower classes were eradicated from old city districts and deported to the outskirts. The Metropolis in Latin America, 1830–1930 surveys this expansion, focusing on six capital cities—Havana, Mexico City, Rio de Janeiro, Buenos Aires, Santiago de Chile, and Lima—as it examines sociopolitical histories, town planning, art and architecture, photography, and film in relation to the metropolis. Drawing from the Getty Research Institute’s vast collection of books, prints, and photographs from this period, largely unpublished until now, this volume reveals the cities’ changes through urban panoramas, plans depicting new neighborhoods, and photographs of novel transportation systems, public amenities, civic spaces, and more.
