Ultimately, this book will serve as both a historical document and a voyeur's delight, capturing a specific moment in time for the White House, the Obamas, and the American experience.

In December 1962, Da Vinci's Mona Lisa set sail from Paris to New York for what was arguably the riskiest art exhibition ever mounted. The fragile icon traveled like a head of state, with armed guards and military surveillance, in a temperature-controlled vault. Masterminding the entire show was First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy, who tirelessly campaigned to persuade National Gallery Director John Walker, French President Charles de Gaulle, and her own husband to debut the legendary smile here. For 88 charmed days, "Lisa Fever" swept the nation as nearly two million Americans attended exhibits in Washington, D.C. and New York. It was the greatest outpouring of appreciation for a single work of art in American history. And as only Jacqueline Kennedy could do, she infused America's first museum blockbuster show with a unique sense of pageantry, igniting a national love affair with the arts. Gathering rare archival documents and interviews, acclaimed biographer Margaret Leslie Davis has woven a tantalizing saga, filled with international intrigue and the irresistible charm of Camelot and its queen.

Introducing the concept of music and painting as 'rival sisters' during the nineteenth century, this interdisciplinary collection explores the productive exchange-from rivalry to inspiration to collaboration-between the two media in the age of Romanticism and Modernism. The volume traces the relationship between art and music, from the opposing claims for superiority of the early nineteenth century, to the emergence of the concept of synesthesia around 1900. This collection puts forward a more complex history of the relationship between art and music than has been described in earlier works, including an intermixing of models and distinctions between approaches to them. Individual essays from art history, musicology, and literature examine the growing influence of art upon music, and vice versa, in the works of Berlioz, Courbet, Manet, Fantin-Latour, Rodin, Debussy, and the Pre-Raphaelites, among other artists.

George Washington written by White House Historical Association and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008 with Toy and movable books categories.

The first work of art purchased for the White House was a full-length portrait of President George Washington, painted by Gilbert Stuart in 1797. Thanks to its rescue by First Lady Dolley Madison, it is the only object that has remained in the White House collection since before the British torched the building during the War of 1812. This portrait is featured in Scala's new 4-fold edition, celebrating the White House collection of paintings and objects associated with the first president. Although Washington personally selected the site for the White House, hired the architect, and even specified the design, he was, ironically, the only president never to live there. He spent his two-term presidency in temporary residences in New York and Philadelphia, while the permanent President's House was constructed in the new City of Washington. John Adams was the first president to reside there in 1800. Today the President's House that Washington envisioned, but never inhabited, is one of the most famous buildings in the world. Published in cooperation with the White House Historical Association, this book is fully illustrated with images of fine and decorative arts objects related to George Washington and his presidency in the White House collection, including personal possessions, portraits, paintings, sculpture, documents, ephemera and commemorative objects - symbols not only of the man but of the new nation that revered him. AUTHOR: The White House Historical Association is a non-profit educational organization, chartered on November 3, 1961, to enhance understanding, appreciation, and enjoyment of the historic White House. SELLING POINTS: *Will appeal to anyone interested in Washington and the White House, and what can be learned about his life and accomplishments from the White House collection *Showcases items in the White House collection of fine and decorative arts that are of historical significance and relevance to this president and his presidency *One of the first titles in a series of books produced with the White House Historical Association on the American Presidents as represented in the White House collection 64 colour & 8 b/w illustrations

James Mcneill Whistler And France written by Suzanne Singletary and has been published by Taylor & Francis this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-11-18 with Art categories.

James McNeill Whistler and France: A Dialogue in Paint, Poetry, and Music is the first full-length and in-depth study to position this painter within the overall trajectory of French modernism during the second half of the nineteenth century and to view the artist as integral to the aesthetic projects of its most original contributors. Suzanne M. Singletary maintains that Whistler was in a unique situation as an insider within the emerging French avant-garde, thereby in an enviable position to both absorb and transform the innovations of others – and that until now, his widespread influence as a catalyst among his colleagues has been neither investigated nor appreciated. Singletary contends that Whistler’s importance rivals that of Manet, whose multi-layered (and often unexpected) interconnections with Whistler are the focus of one chapter. In addition, Whistler’s pivotal role in linking the legacies of Baudelaire, Delacroix, Gautier, Wagner, and other mid-century innovators to the later French Symbolists has previously been largely ignored. Courbet, Degas, Monet, and Seurat complete the roster of French artists whose dialogue with Whistler is highlighted.
