Christianity has repeatedly valued the "Word" over and above the non-verbal arts. Art has been seen through the interpretative lens of theology, rather than being valued for what it can bring to the discipline. 'Explorations in Art, Theology and Imagination' argues that art is crucially important to theology. The book explores the interconnecting themes of embodiment and incarnation, faith and imagination, and the similarities and differences between art and theology. Arguing for a critique that begins with art and moves to theology, 'Explorations in Art, Theology and Imagination' offers a radical re-evaluation of the role of art in Christian discourse.

"The visual arts, a privileged means of communicating Christian belief for more than a thousand years, were marginalized if not rejected by 16th-century reformers. This volume, containing papers read in a five-part conference held in France, Italy and the USA in 2017, brings together Catholic, Protestant, Orthodox and Anglican theologians, art historians and artists in an unprecendented ecumenical conversation indispensable for furture dialogue. With its broad range of confessional and methodological viewpoints, it offers an 'agora' experience of faith-based reactions to human creation and communication."--

Why should the church be involved with the arts? What are the roles that the arts play in the religious life? How does art reveal the presence of God? What is the relationship between the spiritual and the aesthetic? What is the relationship between Christian symbols and their artistic expression? How can the arts be used in the practice of ministry and worship? A renewed interest in religion and the arts is creating these questions as it emerges in both academic and church settings. Arts, Theology, and the Church--a never before published collection of essays from pre-eminent scholars in the field of religion and the arts--reveals these scholars' most edgy, contemporary thoughts. It is a foundational work that offers new understandings about the relationship of the arts to theology, history, and the practice of ministry in the church.

Transforming Christian Thought In The Visual Arts written by Sheona Beaumont and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-07-06 with Religion categories.

This volume explores how the visual arts are presenting and responding to Christian theology and demonstrates how modern and contemporary artists and artworks have actively engaged in conversation with Christianity. Modern intellectual enquiry has often been reluctant to engage theology as an enriching or useful form of visual analysis, but critics are increasingly revisiting religious narratives and Christian thought in pursuit of understanding our present-day visual culture. In this book an international group of contributors demonstrate how theology is often implicit within artworks and how, regardless of a viewer’s personal faith, it can become implicit in a viewer’s visual encounter. Their observations include deliberate juxtaposition of Christian symbols, imaginative play with theologies, the validation of non-confessional or secular public engagement, and inversions of biblical interpretation. Case studies such as an interactive Easter, glow-sticks as sacrament, and visualisation of the Bible’s polyphonic voices enrich this discussion. Together, they call for a greater interpretative generosity and more nuance around theology’s cultural contexts in the modern era. By engaging with theology, culture, and the visual art, this collection offers a fresh lens through which to see the interaction of religion and art. As such, it will be of great use to those working in Religion and the Arts, Visual Art, Material Religion, Theology, Aesthetics, and Cultural Studies.

This book, first published in hardback by Macmillan in 1991, appeared in paperback in 1998, with a new concluding chapter and extra illustrations. After an opening chapter which tells 'the story of modern art', George Pattison leads the reader through a more or less historical narrrative of the relationship between Christianity and the visual arts. He begins with the deep-rooted fear of images in the Judaeo-Christian tradition, through Thomism and the writings of Maritain, Rukin and Forsyth, into the uncertainties of the twentieth century. There are concluding discussions on how respect for the integrity iof the visual image becomes a way of grace and how the Zen experience indicates a method which can be used by both theologians and artists. 'It is rare to encounter an author so deeply informed in matters of religion and theology while being so obviously at home in the history and theory of the arts. Combining tese spheres of learning, George Pattison makes a distinctive contribution to understanding religiously significant aspects of art, providing in the process a fresh perspective on why the religious or theological import of art cannot fully be captured in other media of human creation and reflection.' (Theology) George Pattison is Lady Margaret Professor of Divinity in te University of Oxford and a Canon of Christ Church Cathedral, Oxford.

A Natural Theology Of The Arts written by Anthony Monti and has been published by Taylor & Francis this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-07-05 with Religion categories.

A Natural Theology of the Arts contends that the arts are theological by their very nature and not simply when they are explicitly religious - thereby constituting a distinctive kind of 'natural theology'. Borrowing from science the stance of 'critical realism' to justify truth claims in art and theology, it argues that works of art are complex metaphors that convey the 'real presence' of God, even when not labelled as such. Citing numerous examples from literature, painting, and music - including Shakespeare's King Lear, Vermeer's Young Woman with a Water Jug, Rembrandt's Return of the Prodigal Son, and Stephen Cleobury's experiences performing Bach's St Matthew Passion and Britten's Rejoice in the Lamb - the author concludes that works of art anticipate the new creation, thereby suggesting a Trinitarian account of the God present in the creation and reception of such works.

A Wounded Innocence written by Alejandro R. Garcia-Rivera and has been published by Liturgical Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-03-15 with Religion categories.

What is the theological significance of art? Why has the Church always encouraged the arts? What is so profoundly human about the arts? In A Wounded Innocence Alejandro R. Garcia-Rivera answers these questions in a series of sketches" that are mixed spiritual and theological reflections on various works of art written in a poetic style. These reflections explore the relationship between the multi-dimensional spiritual and the arts. The first *sketch, - *The Beginning of Art, - introduces the rest that go on to explore further the human, artistic, and theological implications of a wounded innocence. Each *sketch - reflects on a particular human work of art. Some are conventional works of art. Others may never find their way into a museum but, then, that is one of the implications coming out of this book. A museum does not define what a work of art is, its human depth does. In these deeply studied yet spiritually written reflections on each work of art, it is hoped that the reader will find his and her own creative depth described, perhaps even revealed. A Wounded Innocence is both inspiring and informative. Readers will learn about art, spirituality, and theology, and will find themselves inspired to look at works of art, and even to produce a work of art. It sets a new way of doing theology that is at the same time spiritual. More importantly, Garcia-Rivera describes a theology of art. Chapters are *The Beginning of Art, - *The End of Art, - *Human Freedom and Artistic Creativity, - *Heaven-with-Us, - *The Human Aspect of Atonement, - *The Tyger and the Lamb, - and *A Wounded Innocence. - Includes black and white art. Alejandro R. Garcia-Rivera, PhD, is associate professor of systematic theology at the Jesuit School of Theology at Berkeley. The author of numerous articles, he also wrote a Catholic Press Association award-winning book on theology and aesthetics titled The Community of the Beautiful (The Liturgical Press). "
