Art of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland & the Republic of Ireland in 20th–21st Centuries and Polish–British & Irish Art Relations is the fifth volume of Studies on Modern Art and a first book of this kind in Poland.The volume presents research on British and Irish art conducted mainly by Polish scholars. So far, the research on British art in the 20th century – in comparison to the research on modern French, German, Russian, Italian and American art – has been taken up only sporadically. The greatest number of Polish publications have concernedpost-war British art, while there is almost no publication devoted to interwar art. No research on Irish art has been conducted so far. Thus, the studies on modern Irish art seem to be an important novelty. The widest range of previous interests has concerned the art of the Polish emigration circle since World War II. Like Polish artistic colonies in Rome in the 19th century, in Munich in the second half of the 19th century, and in Paris since the late 19th century, the Polish emigration colony in London with numerous organizations, galleries and magazines has drawn attention as an important element of Polish art and Polish artistic tradition. Particular attention should be paid to a group of studies devoted to works by Jewish artists or artists of Jewish origin from Poland. The volume is divided into Introduction and 6 sections: (1) Polish–British Art Relations before 1945, (2) Contemporary British Art, (3) Polish Émigré Art in Great Britain after 1945, (4) Contemporary Polish–British Art Relations, (5) Irish Art,(6) British Art and the World. Thus, a certain image of British art of the 20th century is outlined, as seen from afar. The book is structured chronologically, with focus on selected issues. Subsequent parts present phenomena of British art, sometimes followed by the account of Polish reactions.

Paris et les artistes polonais 1945-1989 / Paris and the Polish artists 1945-1989 is a volume dedicated to Polish-French artistic relations after the Second World War, in times dominated politically by communist ideology and defined by Poland’s place within the camp of the countries of ‘people’s democracy’. Since the 1950s, the Polish authorities, discreetly opposed to the political and cultural ideology of Soviet socialist realism, generally rejected in 1955 by artistic circles, promoted modernity based on a model of art-shaped in France – a country that supported Poland politically (with the involvement of the French president Charles de Gaulle) and where the Left held a strong position, with ties to the Communist Party of France. The pro-French policy of Poland (in terms of culture, too) also resulted from the desire to marginalize London as the seat of the Polish government in exile.

Książka jest pierwszą próbą ujęcia w szerokiej perspektywie dorobku polskich artystek dwudziestolecia międzywojennego w zakresie grafiki artystycznej. Ponad sto twórczyń z różnych środowisk artystycznych uprawiało tę dziedzinę, wyróżniając się oryginalnością postaw twórczych, różnorodnością i intensywnością poszukiwań własnych środków wyrazu, a także wysokim poziomem wykonania. Choć były one pierwszymi (po nielicznych poprzedniczkach tworzących w okresie Młodej Polski) profesjonalistkami, ich twórczość jest z reguły pomijana nie tylko z powodu płci graficzek, ale także statusu uprawianej przez nie dyscypliny, która przez wieki postrzegana była jako podrzędna względem malarstwa i „usługowa” wobec literatury. Jakie były przyczyny zainteresowania się tak dużej liczby uzdolnionych kobiet grafiką artystyczną, wcześniej, poza nielicznymi wyjątkami, uprawianą przez mężczyzn? Czy i w jakim stopniu graficzki zdobyły się na samodzielność koncepcji artystycznej wobec dominującego męskiego punktu widzenia? Czy kryły się za świetnie opanowanym warsztatem i umiejętnościami, tworząc „tak jak” ich koledzy i nauczyciele, czy odnalazły w tej dziedzinie własny obszar ekspresji i środki graficzne jemu służące? Polskie graficzki tworzące w latach 20. i 30. XX wieku, świadome własnych możliwości i specyfiki obranej dyscypliny, odnosiły sukcesy na ogólnopolskiej arenie sztuki i poza granicami kraju; brały udział w licznych, prestiżowych wystawach grafiki i konkursach; zrzeszały się w artystycznych grupach, były członkiniami Związku Polskich Artystów Grafików.Ich twórczość w zakresie grafiki warsztatowej cechuje szczególna rola barwy, upodobanie do form art déco, współistnienie nowych motywów ikonograficznych i tradycyjnych poddanych niekiedy modyfikacji. Looking past the apparent lack of a sustainable Irish display culture, this book demonstrates that there is a very full story to tell of the way Ireland displayed its art from the late eighteenth to the early twentieth century. Ireland on Show analyzes the impact of the display of art as a significant political and cultural feature in the make-up of nineteenth-century Ireland - and in how Ireland was viewed beyond its own shores, in particular in Great Britain and the United States. Fintan Cullen directs much-needed critical attention and analysis to a subject that has been largely overlooked from an Irish perspective. This study moves beyond museums, to address the range of art institutions in Irish cities that displayed art, from the Royal Hibernian Academy, founded in the 1820s, to Hugh Lane's Municipal Art Gallery, opened in Dublin in 1908. Throughout, the book explores the battle between the display of a unionist ethos and a nationalist point of view, a constant that resurfaces over the period. By highlighting the tension between unionist and nationalist viewpoints, Cullen uses the display of art to investigate the complexities of Irish cultural life before the founding of the Free State.
