American Artists On Art written by and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-02-20 with Art categories.

From the Preface: The fact that so much of modern art has devoted itself to the exploration and assertion of its own identity is reflected in, but does not explain, the increasing amount of writing and talking on the part of contemporary artists. Rather, the whole history of the changing role of art and artists in a democratic, industrial, and technological society stands behind the spate of artists' words and the public's hunger for them--even some of the general public out there beyond art's little circle. Statements by artists appeal somewhat the way drawings do: they bring us, or at least they hold the promise of bringing us, closer to the artist's thoughts and feelings and to an understanding of his or her modus operandi; they hold the keys to a mysterious realm. And sometimes they offer us the sheer pleasure of good reading. Such is the primary raison d'etre of this book. Its other motivation is educational, and stems from the frustrating lack, in teaching contemporary art, of any single compilation of statements by American artists from 1940 to the present.... This anthology differs in several respects from those others that do include documents of American art since 1940.... The selection I have made is devoted exclusively to statements of artists; it is limited to the last four decades; it presents in a single volume a representative and fairly comprehensive coverage of major developments in American art beginning with Abstract Expressionism; and, whenever possible, it cities the first, or among the very earliest, documents signalizing a shift in the definition, intent, or direction of art."

"Modern Contemporary is the first publication to address the extensive holdings of contemporary art in the collection of The Museum of Modern Art, New York. The book covers an international spectrum of art in a variety of mediums all made within the final two decades of the twentieth century. Organized chronologically and encompassing a prime selection of the Museum's recent acquisitions of painting, sculpture, architecture, photography, drawing, design, prints, film, and video, this rich and varied array of art from 1980 until now offers a virtual compendium of the visual culture of our own time." "This lively panorama of stimulating juxtapositions, sequences, and cross references provides more than 550 works of art, the vast majority in full color, demonstrating just how actively the Museum, celebrated worldwide for its incomparable early modern collection, has been acquiring works from the present and the immediate past."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Defining Contemporary Art written by Daniel Birnbaum and has been published by Phaidon Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-11-07 with Art categories.

In the mid-1980s the sprouting of new movements that had driven modern art since the nineteenth century finally went dormant, sputtering out with a last few half-hearted lels ('pattern painting', 'neo-geo', 'commodity art'). But this was not the end of art history -- far from it. In the years since, art's creative development has remained more vibrant than ever, resulting in a staggering diversity of new forms. Defining Contemporary Art responds to this unique landscape with an innovative approach to art history. Assembled and written by eight of the most prominent curators working today, all of whom have both witnessed and shaped this period, Defining Contemporary Art tells the story of the two hundred pivotal artworks of the past twenty-five years. These artworks include not only the most talked out pieces but also the quietly influential works, those which may have been overlooked at the time of their making but which went on to change the paradigm of their era. Arranged year by year, these two hundred works provide a true chronological depiction of creativity in our era, forming a mosaic in which readers may find their own patterns..
