This Tiny Folio book highlights the works of The National Gallery, London, which has one of the most magnificent--and the most beloved--collections of paintings in the world. Founded in 1824, the National Gallery houses a rich and comprehensive range of European painting from the Middle Ages to the 1920s. Among the works represented in this colorful and compact survey of the Gallery's collection are masterpieces by Sandro Botticelli, Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, Raphael, Titian, Rembrandt, Peter Paul Rubens, Claude Monet, Vincent van Gogh, Edgar Degas, and Paul Cézanne, as well as some lesser-known delights. Located on Trafalgar Square, in the heart of London, the original Wilkins Building has recently been extended by the handsome new Sainsbury Wing, which contains some of the world's greatest paintings.

"Although the gallery possesses some important English works, including Hogarth, portraits by Gainsborough and landscapes by Constable and Turner, it is not in English art that the glories of the collection lie. Its greatest treasures are its masterpieces from Italy, Flanders, Holland, Germany, France and Spain."--BOOK JACKET.

England’s national Gallery is renowned for what is probably the most balanced collection of paintings in the world. With the Keeper of the National Gallery as a guide through these pages, the reader will discover the superlative treasures of every period -- glories of the Italian Renaissance, great achievements of seventeenth-century French painting, Sir Robert Peel’s collection of Dutch and Flemish works, the perfections of English art at its highest. This volume is one of an extraordinary series of art books presenting, as on a guided tour, the Great Museums of the World. Each presents the museum’s most important and memorable works of art--all especially photographed for this series and all reproduced in superb full color. The Manchester Art Treasures Exhibition Of 1857 written by ElizabethA. Pergam and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-07-05 with Art categories.

An overdue study of a groundbreaking event, this is the first book-length examination of the Manchester Art Treasures Exhibition of 1857. Intended to rehabilitate Manchester's image at a heady time of economic prosperity, the Exhibition became a touchstone for aesthetic, social, and economic issues of the mid-nineteenth century. Reverberations of this moment can be followed to the present day in the discipline of art history and its practice in public museums of Europe and America. Highlighting the tension between art and commerce, philanthropy and profit, the book examines the Exhibition's organization and the presentation of the works of art in the purpose-built Art Treasures Palace. Pergam places the Exhibition in the context of contemporary debates about museum architecture and display. With an analysis of the reception of both "Ancient" and "Modern" paintings, the book questions the function of exhibitions in the construction of an art historical canon. The book also provides an essential reference tool: a compiled list of all of the paintings exhibited in 1857 that are now in public collections throughout the world, with an analysis of the collecting trends manifest in their provenance.

The set owned by Sir George Scharf, director of the National Portrait Gallery. Scharf has annotated and interleaved these pages with manuscripts and letters received, newspaper clippings, and printed pamphlets, in effect producing an unpublished corrected and enlarged second edition. In a fair copy of a letter to John Murray (1855 March 16), Scharf cites numerous errata and inaccuracies in Waagen. Scharf had access to the great historic homes and private collections of art in England and based his revisions on first-hand knowledge. Newspaper clippings record the loss, dispersal or sale of the collections originally surveyed by Waagen. Letters received from connoisseurs, collectors, and artists include Lord Cowper, Lady Louisa Egerton, Frederic George Stephens, W.A. Scott Robertson, George Redford, the Earl of Ellesmere, R.S. Holford, and Sir Charles Lock Eastlake. Printed materials include "A Catalogue of the Orleans' Italian pictures ..." (London, 1798) and the text of Scharf's paper on the paintings in the collection of the Society of Antiquaries of London (1862 Nov. 20). The first volume of the set contains a dedication to Scharf from the translator, Lady Eastlake.
