"With Art As My Weapon" explores the major principles which have guided Soichiro Fukutake's philanthropic work in revitalizing villages in Japan, with increased potential for similar developments to occur in China and in other parts of Asia and the rest of the world. The book showcases individual and collective developments which can be used elsewhere to revitalize once neglected rural areas and create a practical alternative to the urban rat-race environment, instead focusing on a renewed quality of life not often found in major metropolitan areas. Such possibilities offer a profound new way of thinking on rural renewal and planning policy.

Culture As Weapon written by Nato Thompson and has been published by Melville House this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-01-17 with Social Science categories.

One of the country's leading activist curators explores how corporations and governments have used art and culture to mystify and manipulate us. The production of culture was once the domain of artists, but beginning in the early 1900s, the emerging fields of public relations, advertising and marketing transformed the way the powerful communicate with the rest of us. A century later, the tools are more sophisticated than ever, the onslaught more relentless. In Culture as Weapon, acclaimed curator and critic Nato Thompson reveals how institutions use art and culture to ensure profits and constrain dissent--and shows us that there are alternatives. An eye-opening account of the way advertising, media, and politics work today, Culture as Weapon offers a radically new way of looking at our world.

Social Realism Art As A Weapon written by David Shapiro and has been published by Burns & Oates this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1973 with Art categories.

In an introductory essay, David Shapiro appraises the roots and achievements of Social Realism, providing an overall framework within which the source material that follows can be understood. Was Social Realism only a response to the economic collapse of the 1930s, or was it part of a continuing American art tradition? A primary selection of documents -- ranging from Hugo Gellert's exultant" We Capture the Walls" (1932) to Oliver Larkin's retrospective "Common Cause" (1949) -- fixes the period's social and aesthetic background. It includes spirited contributions by Diego Rivera, Meyer Schapiro, Stuart Davis, and others. A second selection of documents focuses on five major Social Realists -- Philip Evergood, William Gropper, Jacob Lawrence, Jack Levine, and Ben Shahn -- for closer study. This section includes individual biographical outlines, personal statements by the artists, and representative critical analyses of their work. The book concludes with an especially compiled list of major Social Realists, an extended bibliography, and a detailed index. Includes ten reproductions. --! From book jacket.

Guns In The Hands Of Artists written by Jonathan Ferrara and has been published by Inkshares this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-11-01 with Art categories.

In the 1990s, the New Orleans murder rate exploded. In 1996, 350 people were killed—the highest number in the city’s history, and the highest rate in the nation. In response to this crisis, gallery owner and artist Jonathan Ferrara and artist Brian Borrello, launched a powerful project: Guns in the Hands of Artists. Over sixty artists, including painters, glass artists, sculptors, photographers, and poets, used decommissioned guns taken off the city streets via a gun buyback program to express a thought, make a statement, open a discussion, and to stimulate thinking about guns and gun violence in America. As gun violence continues to devastate the nation on a daily basis, Guns in the Hands of Artists reemerged in 2012 as a community-based social activist art project that has since traveled to six cities across the US. Using art as a mirror for life and interweaving the works of thirty diverse artists with the voices of seventeen national thought leaders, this book is an important outgrowth of the exhibition and an extension of its efforts to employ art as a vehicle for dialogue, as a call to action, and—ultimately—as an agent of change. Essays by: Walter Isaacson, Senator Tim Kaine, Lupe Fiasco, Richard Ford, Joe Nocera, Trymaine Lee, Lolis Eric Elie, John M. Barry, Dan Cameron, Lucia McBath, Harry Shearer, Jonathan Ferrara, Brian Borrello, Maria Cuomo Cole, Michael Waldman, E. Ethelbert Miller, Mayor Mitchell J. Landrieu, Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords and Captain Mark Kelly.
