La generación de conocimiento desde la práctica no goza de pleno reconocimiento en las disciplinas de comunicación. Los formatos de creación, producción, guión, realización... no se encuentran valorados como objetos de producción de los académicos. Con el trabajo que el lector tiene entre las manos queremos posicionarnos ante lo que nos parece una opción apasionante de convertir este hecho en objeto de reflexión y de práctica académica activista.Como alternativa, se apuesta por la transdisciplinariedad, componente creciente en el ámbito de las ciencias sociales y humanas. En el ámbito artístico, que tomamos como ejemplo, la problematización de las gramáticas visuales hegemónicas y la experimentación cuestionan constantemente el concepto de investigación, destacando su componente de proceso colectivo y social.Ambos ámbitos –arte y comunicación– comparten ciertas lógicas de producción de textos o productos de creación/artísticos, que no son valorados como criterios para las múltiples acreditaciones, evaluaciones de sexenios, etc., de aquellos profesores, artistas, académicos responsables de ellos. Detrás de esta falta de interés por incluir estos tipos de producción práctica, ya algo salvada para los compañeros de bellas artes, en ciencias de la comunicación se encuentra la excusa de su falta de sistematización, la extendida idea de lo etéreo de la inspiración o la escasa claridad de los criterios aplicables. Por el contrario, creemos que puede haber un acercamiento racional hacia el fenómeno del arte y la creación y que este es aplicable a manifestaciones de las ciencias sociales como la comunicación.Esta monografía tiene, como objetivos principales, movilizar el conocimiento, ampliar esta visión transdisciplinar y establecer un marco para comenzar el debate interdisciplinar entre los estudios digitales, el activismo, las prácticas artísticas y la comunicación.

Visual artists, curators, and critics sought to fuse art and politics; to broaden the definition of art to encompass happenings and assemblages; and, above all, to achieve international recognition for new, cutting-edge Argentine art. A bestseller in Argentina, Avant-Garde, Internationalism, and Politics is an examination of the 1960s as a brief historical moment when artists, institutions, and critics joined to promote an international identity for Argentina’s visual arts. The renowned Argentine art historian and critic Andrea Giunta analyzes projects specifically designed to internationalize Argentina’s art and avant-garde during the 1960s: the importation of exhibitions of contemporary international art, the sending of Argentine artists abroad to study, the organization of prize competitions involving prestigious international art critics, and the export of exhibitions of Argentine art to Europe and the United States. She looks at the conditions that made these projects possible—not least the Alliance for Progress, a U.S. program of “exchange” and “cooperation” meant to prevent the spread of communism through Latin America in the wake of the Cuban Revolution—as well as the strategies formulated to promote them. This book is an extensive investigation of the complexities, ambiguities and shortcomings of contemporary digital activism. The author deconstructs the reductionism of the literature on social movements and communication, proposing a new conceptual vocabulary based on practices, ecologies, imaginaries and algorithms to account for the communicative complexity of protest movements. Drawing on extensive fieldwork on social movements, collectives and political parties in Spain, Italy and Mexico, this book disentangles the hybrid nature of contemporary activism. It shows how activists operate merging the physical and the digital, the human and the non-human, the old and the new, the internal and the external, the corporate and the alternative. The author illustrates the ambivalent character of contemporary digital activism, demonstrating that media imaginaries can be either used to conceal authoritarianism, or to reimagine democracy. The book looks at both side of algorithmic power, shedding light on strategies of repression and propaganda, and scrutinizing manifestations of algorithms as appropriation and resistance. The author analyses the way in which digital activism is not an immediate solution to intricate political problems, and argues that it can only be effective when a set of favourable social, political, and cultural conditions align. Assessing whether digital activism can generate and sustain long-term processes of social and political change, this book will be of interest to students and scholars researching radical politics, social movements, digital activism, political participation and current affairs more generally.
