Arte come esperienza costituisce uno dei maggiori contributi della cultura angloamericana all’estetica del Novecento. In quest’opera Dewey non si limita a elaborare una filosofia dell’arte come disciplina specialistica. Emerge qui un nuovo paradigma per l’esperienza in generale, individuato nell’estetico quale ordine di perfezionamento e compimento delle istanze sensoriali ed emotive dell’uomo. Ne deriva una concezione attenta a cogliere e vagliare criticamente le fitte relazioni dell’arte e dell’estetico sia con le dinamiche esperienziali sia con le realtà sociali che le alimentano. Dewey mette così a fuoco motivi di crisi della cultura contemporanea, delineando l’impalcatura di un’antropologia nutrita anche dai frutti delle rivoluzioni artistiche primonovecentesche. Questi caratteri hanno reso Arte come esperienza un classico per le riflessioni sull’esperienza estetica, illuminante per importanti artisti, da Josef Albers a Mark Rothko, e oggi ancora al centro dell’attenzione in vari ambiti cruciali del dibattito filosofico.

Il saggio, del 1925, costituisce un’agile ed esaustiva introduzione ai temi dell’estetica di John Dewey, che troveranno sviluppo in Arte come esperienza (1934). I temi fondamentali dell’estetica di Dewey sono: il recupero dell’esperienza nell’arte; l’esteticità diffusa dell’esperienza ordinaria; il valore “vitale” dell’estetico; la relazione tra dimensione cognitiva e dimensione estetica dell’esperienza. Il saggio non offre solo un accesso immediato all’estetica di Dewey – oltre a essere l’unico suo saggio di estetica non disponibile in italiano: una prima traduzione degli anni ’70 è da tempo fuori catalogo – ma è anche il saggio in cui Dewey pone maggiormente l’accento sull’intreccio tra strumentalità dell’agire umano e godimento estetico: ne emerge l’immagine di un soggetto che, mentre trae piacere dall’esperienza che fa, seleziona le competenze necessarie a una più stretta interazione con l’ambiente; parallelamente l’attività artistica è pensata come momento di apprendimento e di costruzione di modelli di conoscenza.
