Nahuatl is the language used by the ancient Aztecs and the Nahua Indians of Central Mexico. This text introduces the language using an anthropological approach, teaching learners to understand Nahuatl according to its own distinctive grammar and to reject translationalist descriptions based on English or Spanish notions of grammar. In particular, the author emphasizes the nonexistence of words in Nahuatl (except for the few so-called particles) and stresses the nuclear clause as the basis for Nahuatl linguistic organization.

Excerpt from Arte de la Lengua Mexicana: Que Fue Usual Entre los Indios del Obispado de Guadalajara y de Parte de los de Durango y Michoacan Escrito en 1692 El libro de Guerra tampoco existe en la Biblioteca del Esta do, no escasa en obras de idiomas del pais y que debiera es tar interesada como ninguna otra en poseerlo, puesto que tal libro, publicado en 1692, - y no en 1699 como erroneamente es cribió Beristain, ni en 1669 como aparece en el citado Cuadro del Sr. Orozco y Berra, - es la autoridad más grande en mate ria de conocimientos acerca del Mexicano que se hablaba en Xalixco, porque aunque sobre esta misma lengua escribió el ya citado bachiller Cortés y Zedeño, autor de cuya obra si hay va rios ejemplares en aquel establecimiento, como este escritor mo destamente lo confesó, refiriéndose a los Carochis, Rincones, Betancourts y Guerras, quienes llama los antiguos Cicero nes del Idioma Mexicano, estos celosos Ministros bebieron, como dicen, el agua, 6 en sus mismas fuentes, 6 al menos cuando no estaban lejos de su origen ni llevaban mezcla de otras, nacidas de diversos manantiales. Quiero decir explica el mismo, que escribieron, 6: quando los Indios acavaban de sa lir de su gentilida d, y cousi guientemente mantenían todavia en su nativo candor su propria Lengua; ó por lo menos quando no havian passado siglos, como han pasado ahora de su comercio y trato con los Españoles, con cuya comunica cion han ido aprendiendo varias palabras castellanas.
