Concluida la Guerra Civil, en un contexto histórico, social y artístico fuertemente ideologizado y caracterizado por un dirigismo oficial, se retomó la organización de las exposiciones nacionales de Bellas Artes, que desde 1856 venían celebrándose en España como un instrumento del Estado para la protección y desarrollo del arte español. En el presente volumen se lleva a cabo un análisis individualizado de cada uno de los certámenes que se celebraron entre 1941 y 1968, tanto en sus aspectos de organización interna como, desde una perspectiva crítica y artística, de las secciones de pintura, escultura y arquitectura en que se estructuraban a través de un copioso e inédito material archivístico y hemerográfico, que se completa con la inclusión de numerosas ilustraciones. Estudio que recoge las manifestaciones artísticas que se han venido desarrollando en el seno del arte valenciano desde 1939 a 1975. La investigación ha sacado a la luz gran cantidad de documentación y obra plástica desconocida que obraba en archivos y colecciones privadas. En este nuevo horizonte artístico que se abre tras la Guerra Civil española, podemos establecer tres generaciones de autores plásticos. «Las artes plásticas de posguerra» comprendería las aportaciones situadas entre 1939 y 1956, época marcada por todas las dificultades y privaciones de la postguerra, en un contexto plástico que hacía de la tradición el punto de referencia. «Abstracción y figuración en los años cincuenta», etapa entre 1956 y 1964, cuyos representantes cruzaron la frontera de la abstracción o apostaron por lenguajes de modernidad en el seno de la figuración. La tercera generación comprende la última etapa del franquismo, desde 1964, con aportaciones que se vertebran en tres bloques: «Pop Art y Realismo Social», «La segunda generación abstracta» y «Las estéticas individuales en los años sesenta».

Para todas las dictaduras, y más si surgen tras una cruenta conflagración civil, la imagen legitimadora es básica. Esta imagen ha de ser ganada, no en los campos de batalla como lo fue el bolchevismo patrio e internacional -según el lema franquista-, sino en la Opinión Pública conformada por acólitos, neutrales y contrarios. Por ello, los discursos persuasivos y propagandísticos han de ser complementarios con el diario quehacer del unificador y pretendidamente conciliador ‘gobernar para todos los españoles’. El Régimen del 18 de julio utilizó al cine como mejor escaparate de sus logros y hazañas (con h). Este lenguaje audiovisual suponía el único de tal naturaleza hasta bien entrada la década de los 60, cuando la televisión irrumpe en los hogares españoles de manera generalizada. Títulos, hoy míticos, servían a los vencedores para transmitir sus valores de manera constante, y no sólo mediante películas netamente propagandísticas, sino también a través de otras mucho más ‘inocentes’ que permitían modelizar una sociedad aceptante del Régimen sin mayores incidencias. España iba bien. Las aportaciones de varios profesores investigadores de la Universidad Española se han plasmado en el presente libro, multidiscipliar y variado, que analiza la unión entre la séptima arte -el cine- y la imagen pública del franquismo reflejada a su través. Patrocinado por el Fórum Internacional de Comunicación y Relaciones Públicas (Fórum XXI), la Sociedad Española de Estudios de la Comunicación Iberoamericana (SEECI) y el Grupo de Investigación Validado Complutense Concilium, el presente trabajo representa una voluntad divulgadora que pretende erigirse como referencia para el tratamiento del fenómeno de las Relaciones Públicas en el mundo universitario, con vocación universalista hacia el gran público y, en especial, hacia el amante de la cinematografía como vehículo de contenidos.

This book explores the history and legacy of monuments to the fallen from the Francoist side in the Spanish Civil War. Del Arco Blanco studies thousands of monuments in towns and cities across Spain to provide a detailed account of the history and memory of the civil war, Francoism, and the transition to democracy. Chapters in the book focus on the myth of those said to have 'fallen for God and for Spain'—a phrase that encapsulated and shaped the dichotomy between ‘good’ and ‘bad’ Spaniards. They also focus on the use of monuments to control political and ideological ideals and to legitimise the Francoist dictatorship. Further chapters study Spanish society’s struggle to deal with its past of mass killing, denial, and exclusion. Del Arco Blanco also pays attention to the way the Francoist authorities used monuments and memory for their political and ideological advantage and to control people, power as well as the political agenda. The book draws on extensive research to reconstruct both the specific history of monuments scattered throughout the country and their role within manipulative Francoist memory of the Spanish Civil War. In these ways, monuments helped shape the Francoist narrative and memory, but they also became part of the landscape of contemporary Spanish history. This book is an excellent resource for postgraduate students and professional researchers studying the aftermath of the Spanish Civil War, and the influence of monuments on the construction of national memory, culture, and society in Spain both at the time and through to the present day.
