Ele me contou que quando era menino, na época do Natal, sempre pedia para que a mãe comprasse um presépio, mas nunca era atendido. Um dia resolveu modelar, ele mesmo, um presépio de barro. Dessa época em diante, nunca mais parou de fazer santos de barro. A motivação de Charles é o ponto de partida para esta pesquisa, cujo objeto geral é a Arte Santeira, frequentemente chamada também de Arte Imaginária por vários autores.Quantos artesãos deve haver hoje que, como Charles, são motivados por uma devoção?Quantos esculpem santos em madeira ou barro porque se encantaram com essa forma de arte?Quantos fazem a mesma coisa porque descobriram que podem viver desse trabalho?É de se esperar que todo artesão tenha a escultura como forma de trabalho e de geração de renda, mas também é de se esperar que essa motivação possa ser consequência de uma das outras, e que nem sempre seja a razão primeira do engajamento nessa produção artística. Charles é um exemplo de alguém que fez do seu desejo de contemplar um presépio, uma forma de ganhar a vida. Os trabalhos sobre arte santeira que existem publicados no Brasil são, na maioria, análise de peças do barroco colonial dos acervos de museus e de colecionadores, ou são biografias de artesãos contemporâneos. Esse trabalho tem a intenção de ser uma fusão dessas duas formas deexaminar o tema.
