The editorial group has selected these papers for publication in Progress in Orthopaedic Surgery from contributions to the "Reisensburg Workshop of Clinical Trauma Surgery" dealing with the lesions of knee ligaments and cartilage in 1975. They represent a survey of today's knowledge of pathophy siology, diagnostic means, and therapy of these lesions in the German-speaking countries. There are two "Reisensburg Workshops" annually, covering current topics of traumatology sponsored by the Ulm trauma group. Primary attention is focused not upon review lectures but rather upon the extensive discussions thus resulting in recommendations to the practising trauma surgeon in order to facilitate his clinical work. Ulm, November 1977 C. Burri, A. Ruter Introduction This volume of Progress in Orthopaedic Surgery presents a selection of papers dealing with injuries to the ligament support and articular surfaces of the knee. The menisci are not discussed as separate entities, but rather in their correct perspective as part of the knee jointsupport mechanism. As the editor for this volume, I have tried to select the most representative articles which cover this subject. These are publications from our European colleagues and reflect their opinion and experience. I have tried not to change their content or meaning in any way. This volume has been divided into six basic segments. Each deserves comment.

Articular Cartilage Tissue Engineering written by Kyriacos A. Athanasiou and has been published by Morgan & Claypool Publishers this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010 with Medical categories.

Cartilage injuries in children and adolescents are increasingly observed, with roughly 20% of knee injuries in adolescents requiring surgery. In the US alone, costs of osteoarthritis (OA) are in excess of $65 billion per year (both medical costs and lost wages). Comorbidities are common with OA and are also costly to manage. Articular cartilage's low friction and high capacity to bear load makes it critical in the movement of one bone against another, and its lack of a sustained natural healing response has necessitated a plethora of therapies. Tissue engineering is an emerging technology at the threshold of translation to clinical use. Replacement cartilage can be constructed in the laboratory to recapitulate the functional requirements of native tissues. This book outlines the biomechanical and biochemical characteristics of articular cartilage in both normal and pathological states, through development and aging. It also provides a historical perspective of past and current cartilage treatments and previous tissue engineering efforts. Methods and standards for evaluating the function of engineered tissues are discussed, and current cartilage products are presented with an analysis on the United States Food and Drug Administration regulatory pathways that products must follow to market. This book was written to serve as a reference for researchers seeking to learn about articular cartilage, for undergraduate and graduate level courses, and as a compendium of articular cartilage tissue engineering design criteria. Table of Contents: Hyaline Articular Cartilage / Cartilage Aging and Pathology / In Vitro / Bioreactors / Future Directions

This book reviews current knowledge on the diagnosis and treatment (surgical and non-surgical) of cartilage defects at the knee joint. In the discussion of diagnosis, the focus is primarily on imaging findings, particularly those obtained with MRI. The remainder of the book is devoted to the full range of current conservative and surgical treatments, with attention to both treatment indications and results as reported in the recent literature. In reviewing non-surgical treatment, oral and intra-articular medical management is evaluated and rehabilitation and physical therapy are also considered. The three main types of surgical technique – microfracture surgery and similar procedures, mosaicplasty and related techniques, and autologous chondrocyte transplantation – are then extensively discussed in a series of highly informative chapters. This book will be of great practical value for clinicians, assisting in daily decision making.
