Modeling of individual beliefs is essential to the computer understanding of natural languages. Phenomena at all levels -- syntactic, semantic, and pragmatic -- cannot be fully analyzed in the absence of models of a hearer and of the hearer's model of other believers. The heart of this text is the presentation of an artificial intelligence (AI) program intended to simulate certain aspects of a human believer. This book provides a prolog program, Viewgen, that maintains belief structures about the world and other believers, and is able to ascribe beliefs to others without direct evidence by using a form of default reasoning. The authors contend that a plausible model such as this can -- in the best cognitive science tradition -- shed light on the long-standing philosophical problem of what belief is. The issues presented here will be of considerable interest to an informed general reader as well as those with a background in any of the disciplines that make up what is now called cognitive science: philosophy, linguistics, psychology, neuropsychology, and also AI itself.

The last decade has seen dramatic advances in artificial intelligence and robotics technology, raising tough questions that need to be addressed. The Robot Will See You Now considers how Christians can respond to these issues - and flourish - in the years ahead. Contributions from a number of international experts, including editors John Wyatt and Stephen Williams, explore a range of social and ethical issues raised by recent advances in AI and robotics. Considering the role of artificial intelligence in areas such as medicine, employment and security, the book looks at how AI is perceived as well as its actual impact on human interactions and relationships. Alongside are theological responses from an orthodox Christian perspective. Looking at how artificial intelligence and robotics may be considered in the light of Christian doctrine, The Robot Will See You Now offers a measured, thoughtful view on how Christians can understand and prepare for the challenges posted by the development of AI. This is a book for anyone who is interested in learning more about how AI and robots have advanced in recent years, and anyone who has wondered how Christian teaching relates to artificial intelligence. Whatever your level of technical knowledge, The Robot Will See You Now will give you a thorough understanding of AI and equip you to respond to the challenges it poses with confidence and faith.

This book explores old and new hopes that have emerged in the human quest to defeat death. On the one hand, it answers questions such as: Are we just physical machines of great complexity, with the brain as the hardware on which consciousness operates as its software? If so, can we speculate on ways in which the mind could be uploaded to a machine and no longer suffer the frailty of this biological body? And could an android robot or a mindfile in a computer simulation be conscious? On the other hand, the book examines the hope of survival through reincarnation according to the teachings of Eastern religions and New Age thought. All these topics are discussed from the perspectives of Christian theology and the philosophy of mind. This dual investigation will help Christians formulate a coherent response to old and new challenges to their faith.

Artificial intelligence has long been a mainstay of science fiction and increasingly it feels as if AI is entering our everyday lives, with technology like Apple's Siri now prominent, and self-driving cars almost upon us. But what do we actually mean when we talk about 'AI'? Are the sentient machines of 2001 or The Matrix a real possibility or will real-world artificial intelligence look and feel very different? What has it done for us so far? And what technologies could it yield in the future? AI expert Yorick Wilks takes a journey through the history of artificial intelligence up to the present day, examining its origins, controversies and achievements, as well as looking into just how it works. He also considers the future, assessing whether these technologies could menace our way of life, but also how we are all likely to benefit from AI applications in the years to come. Entertaining, enlightening, and keenly argued, this is the essential one-stop guide to the AI debate.

Why is the church silent on the ethics of artificial intelligence, gene-splicing and robots? This plain-language book claims it's because she lost interest in science at the onset of the Atomic Age in 1945. It's time to re-focus our thinking as we seek God's truths for the electronic world of the twenty-first century. A huge challenge facing today's church is how to share faith with young people in society as generation gaps widen. The author contends that believers are not being heard because we don't understand modern language. In a world of electronics, gene-splicing, and artificial intelligence, the gospel message is contained in language that makes no room for changes that have remodeled civilization. In discussions of scientific advancements, the church has yet to raise a voice. The book begins with a need to agree on definitions of truth: the Bible. After that, it does not pretend to give many answers but shows areas where to come to grips with the situation. It asks readers to become aware of realities in their own lives. It describes the back-and-forth relationship between church and science. By the time they get along, the church tending to spiritual truths and science, the material research is learning secrets of the atom: the bomb. After 1945, the church forgot its duty of monitoring the spiritual impact of progress: the burden. A big help in recovering may be that thousands of believers work in these new areas, especially the health field and electronics. They may be key players in helping to connect the dots. The impact of electronic media, including effects on the brain, is discussed. Research into the workings of mind and body offer clues on how spiritual truth affects us all. A big question: What and where is our understanding of spiritual truth while the Bible we know is disappearing? Printed books are fading away. This book is written especially with ministers, teachers, parents, and students in mind.

Imagine having lived in the generation that discovered fire. Now, what if current scientific and technological advances reorder our lives every bit as much? Artificial Intelligence, decoding the human genome, links between mind and computer... All these things that were once science fiction are now quickly-and absolutely-becoming science fact. Millions of people feel like aliens in their own country. Like Alice in Wonderland, they no longer understand their families, coworkers, and neighbors. Reality itself has turned slippery. Could machines become sentient? Is "life" really a computer simulation? Does science really have a genetic blueprint for all human life? Believers and unbelievers alike are easily unnerved by such questions. Interestingly though, early Christians, mathematicians, scientists, and philosophers have already addressed these kinds of issues. And they have much to say about our "curiouser and curiouser" new world. In Christianity Through the Looking Glass, pastor, priest, scholar, and counselor Dan Scott invites you to learn what these hallowed ancient voices might have said about faith in the age of Artificial Intelligence.
