The dark universe contains matter and energy unidentifiable with current physical models, accounting for 95% of all the matter and energetic equivalent in the universe. The enormous surplus brings up daunting enigmas, such as the cosmological constant problem and the apparent distortions in the dynamics of deep space, and so coming to grips with the invisible universe has become a scientific imperative. This book addresses this need, reckoning that no cogent physical model of the dark universe can be implemented without first addressing the metaphysical hurdles along the way. The foremost problem is identifying the topology of the universe which, as argued in the book, is highly relevant to unveil the secrets of the dark universe. Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a valuable tool in this effort since it can reconcile conflicting data from deep space with the extant laws of physics by building models to decipher the dark universe. This book explores the applications of AI and how it can be used to embark on a metaphysical quest to identify the topology of the universe as a prerequisite to implement a physical model of the dark sector that enables a meaningful extrapolation into the visibile sector. The book is intended for a broad readership, but a background in college-level physics and computer science is essential. The book will be a valuable guide for graduate students as well as researchers in physics, astrophysics, and computer science focusing on AI applications to elucidate the nature of the dark universe. Key Features: · Provides readers with an intellectual toolbox to understand physical arguments on dark matter and energy. · Up to date with the latest cutting-edge research. · Authored by an expert on artificial intelligence and mathematical physics.

This book explores the possibility of the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to solve one of the cosmos’ biggest mysteries: the nature of undetectable forms of matter, namely dark matter and dark energy, which make up 95% of the universe. The book describes the outcome of this quest in terms of an entangled ur-universe that admits no observer, and incorporates an extra dimension to encode space-time as a latent manifold. A cosmic engine fueled by dark energy that maintains the topology of the universe during its expansion, involving autocatalytic vacuum creation, is identified. The physical picture of the cosmos presented in the book paves the way for a solution to the cosmological constant problem and provides a cogent explanation for the huge gap between the predicted and measured values that has troubled physicists for decades.

As we prod the cosmos at very large scales, basic tenets of physics seem to crumble under the weight of contradicting evidence. This book helps mitigate the crisis. It resorts to artificial intelligence (AI) for answers and describes the outcome of this quest in terms of an ur-universe, a quintessential compact multiply connected space that incorporates a fifth dimension to encode space-time as a latent manifold. In some ways, AI is bolder than humans because the huge corpus of knowledge, starting with the prodigious Standard Model (SM) of particle physics, poses almost no burden to its conjecture-framing processes. Why not feed AI with the SM enriched by the troubling cosmological phenomenology on dark matter and dark energy and see where AI takes us vis-à-vis reconciling the conflicting data with the laws of physics? This is precisely the intellectual adventure described in this book and – to the best of our knowledge – in no other book on the shelf. As the reader will discover, many AI conjectures and validations ultimately make a lot of sense, even if their boldness does not feel altogether "human" yet. This book is written for a broad readership. Prerequisites are minimal, but a background in college math/physics/computer science is desirable. This book does not merely describe what is known about dark matter and dark energy but also provides readers with intellectual tools to engage in a quest for the deepest cosmological mystery.

"AI & GenAI to Explore the Universe" delves into the transformative impact these technologies have on our understanding of the cosmos. This book explores how AI and GenAI are revolutionizing astronomy, astrophysics, and space exploration by providing powerful tools for data analysis, simulation, and prediction. From discovering distant exoplanets and mapping dark matter to simulating the evolution of galaxies and predicting cosmic events, AI and GenAI are becoming indispensable in our quest to unravel the mysteries of the universe. This journey begins with an overview of the evolution of AI and GenAI, tracing their roots and highlighting key technological advancements that have paved the way for their application in space sciences. We then delve into the importance of AI in modern astronomy, showcasing how machine learning algorithms and AI-driven models are enhancing our ability to interpret vast datasets and uncover new celestial phenomena. Current space exploration missions employing AI are examined in detail, demonstrating the practical applications and successes of these technologies in real-world scenarios. The book also explores the foundational concepts of AI and GenAI, providing a solid grounding in the basics of artificial intelligence, understanding generative AI, and the key technologies and algorithms that drive these fields. In the chapters that follow, we investigate specific applications of AI and GenAI in astronomy and space exploration. Topics include data analysis, star and planet detection, machine learning in space telescopes, creating simulations of the universe, predicting cosmic events, and planning space missions. We also explore how these technologies are being used for spacecraft navigation, interplanetary travel, predictive maintenance, and robotic exploration. The most successful scientific theory today about the origin and evolution of the universe is known as the standard Big Bang model, which is one of the most ambitious intellectual constructions of the humanity. It is based on two consolidated branches of theoretical physics, namely, the theory of General Relativity and the Standard Model of particle physics, and is able to make robust predictions, some of them being already confirmed by very precise observations. However, this model is not able to explain some questions raised by observational evidence, such as early inflation of the universe, dark matter and dark energy. This book makes an overview of some of the features of the standard cosmology, and also includes a few original models proposed to solve some of the shortcomings of the standard cosmology, as possible extensions of the Big Bang model. The models, published as articles in scientific journals, introduce new symmetries, fields and particles in order to explain inflation, dark energy and dark matter, separately or in a unified description. The book is addressed especially to PhD students, but also to anyone who is interested in cosmology and astroparticle theory.

Line intensity mapping (LIM) is an observational technique that probes the large-scale structure of the Universe by collecting light from a wide field of the sky. This book demonstrates a novel analysis method for LIM using machine learning (ML) technologies. The author develops a conditional generative adversarial network that separates designated emission signals from sources at different epochs. It thus provides, for the first time, an efficient way to extract signals from LIM data with foreground noise. The method is complementary to conventional statistical methods such as cross-correlation analysis. When applied to three-dimensional LIM data with wavelength information, high reproducibility is achieved under realistic conditions. The book further investigates how the trained machine extracts the signals, and discusses the limitation of the ML methods. Lastly an application of the LIM data to a study of cosmic reionization is presented. This book benefits students and researchers who are interested in using machine learning to multi-dimensional data not only in astronomy but also in general applications.

Get ready to embark on the exciting search for dark matter—the invisible mass that dominates our universe. This popular science book explains why this mysterious dark matter has been incorporated into the standard model of the universe and how scientists are able to “observe” the invisible. The book starts with the early indications of the existence of dark matter, including the strange cohesion of galaxy clusters, before moving on to modern observations like cosmic background radiation. Along the way, you will learn about the direct and indirect methods being used by researchers to track down dark matter and whatever is behind this strange phenomenon. The Mystery of Dark Matter will appeal to general readers who wish to understand what scientists actually know about dark matter, along with the methods they use to help crack the mystery. This book is a translation of the original German 1st edition Das Rätsel Dunkle Materie by Wolfgang Kapferer, published by Springer-Verlag GmbH Deutschland in 2018.The translation was done with the help of artificial intelligence (machine translation by the service DeepL.com). A subsequent human revision was done primarily in terms of content, so that the book will read stylistically differently from a conventional translation. Springer Nature works continuously to further the development of tools for the production of books and on the related technologies to support the authors.
