Artificial Ventilation written by David J. Baker and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-08-23 with Medical categories.

This book provides a basic clinical guide to the principles and practice of artificial ventilation, both manual and mechanical. It covers the development of artificial ventilation through the ages and the essential anatomy and physiology behind it. While there are many detailed texts available on mechanical ventilation, they are usually aimed at the hospital specialist and cover the many complex modes of ventilation used in the hospital setting. This book covers the basics of airway and ventilation management for non-specialists working in pre-hospital and emergency medicine. It fulfils the need for a resource that explains simply and clearly basic respiratory physiology, the pathophysiology behind respiratory failure and the practical aspects of artificial ventilation. This book links the two areas of hospital and pre-hospital practice together to promote better understanding of artificial ventilation by medical, paramedical and nursing personnel working in different fields of medicine.

Over the last two decades, the increasing use of noninvasive ventilation (NIV) has reduced the need for endotracheal ventilation, thus decreasing the rate of ventilation-induced complications. Thus, NIV has decreased both intubation rates and mortality rates in specific subsets of patients with acute respiratory failure (for example, patients with hypercapnia, cardiogenic pulmonary edema, immune deficiencies, or post-transplantation acute respiratory failure). Despite the increased use of NIV in clinical practice, there is still a need for more educational tools to improve clinicians’ knowledge of the indications and contraindications for NIV, the factors that predict failure or success, and also what should be considered when starting NIV. This book has the dual function of being a "classical" text where the major findings in the literature are discussed and highlighted, as well as a practical manual on the tricks and pitfalls to consider in NIV application by both beginners and experts. For example, setting the ventilatory parameters; choosing the interfaces, circuits, and humidification systems; monitoring; and the "right" environment for the "right" patient will be discussed to help clinicians in their choices.

Management of the intensive care patient afflicted by respiratory insufficiency requires knowledge of the pathophysiological basis for altered functions. The etiology and therapy of pulmonary diseases, such as acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) are highly complex. While physiologists and pathophysiologists work prevalently with theoretical modes, clinicians employ sophisticated ventilation support technologies in the attempt to understand the pathophysiological mechanisms of the pulmonary diseases which can present with varying grades of severity. Despite the availability of advanced technologies it is common to personalize the treatment protocol according to the patient's physiologic structure.Given the complexity and difficulties of treating respiratory disease, a strong collaboration between clinicians and physiologists is of fundamtental importance.

Only very few therapeutic modalities are used as extensively as mechanical ventilation in intensive care units, during anaesthesia and in emergency situations. Hence theoretical and practical knowledge in this technique had to be made available to workers in a number of medical specialities. In addition to anaesthetists, who are most familiar with artificial ventilation for historical and practical reasons, surgeons, internists, paediatricians and emergency physicians also need a foundation. Furthermore, the widespread application of this life-supporting method requires that paramedical personnel such as nurses and respiratory therapists be trained to use mechanical ventilation, to understand how it works and to be aware of specific side effects and dangers. This book, edited by Fran~ois Lemaire, is a well-designed present ation of a number of the relevant aspects, types and problems of mechanical ventilation which are important for physicians and paramedical personnel who use it. After a description of the technical principles and maintenance of an artificial ventilator, the main part of the book is devoted to the most frequently used types of mechanical respiratory support, with their specific indications, the pathophysiology of their effects on pulmonary gas exchange and the specific choice and regulation ofthe mechanical variables involved. Older and new types of ventilatory support are discussed; there is a good balance of enough specific information for the inexperienced as well as a critical analysis of the indications for more exotic techniques, such as mandatory minute ventilation, independent lung ventilation and airway pressure release.
