This book reconstructs and compares the social theories of modernity of Georg Simmel and Walter Benjamin, two classic thinkers in German social thought. The author focuses on five main topics: the historical-sociological method through which they investigate modernity; how are the concepts of history and society possible; the consequences of modern metropolis on the construction of individual subjectivity; the aestheticization of everyday life caused by the expansion of commodity culture; and the female culture as a counter-power to the domination of masculine objective culture. Os três ensaios de Georg Simmel que aqui se publicam dedicam-se a outras tantas cidades históricas italianas – Roma, Florença e Veneza – e constituem preciosas reflexões filosóficas e culturais sobre a arte, a estética e a sua relação com a cidade. Escritos no dealbar do século XX, os textos de Simmel trazem à nossa reflexão a cidade como objeto estético. O livro Cidade e Modernidade na literatura de Machado de Assis e Lima Barreto propõe analisar a vida moderna na cidade do Rio de Janeiro a partir da literatura. Machado de Assis (1839-1908) e Lima Barreto (1881-1922) foram argutos observadores do cotidiano fluminense. Pertencendo a gerações diferentes, ambos escreveram sobre momentos importantes da história da cidade, como a transição da monarquia para a república e os conflitos ocorridos nos primeiros anos do novo regime, como a Revolta da Armada e a repressão florianista. A leitura atenta de seus textos revela constantes imagens e alusões a tal universo cultural e social. Os romances Esaú e Jacó (1904) e Triste fim de Policarpo Quaresma (1915) transmitem uma capital dinâmica e politicamente conturbada. Os contos "Uns braços", "Missa do Galo", "A cartomante", "A causa secreta", de Machado, e "Um e outro", "O homem que sabia javanês", "Cló", "O filho de Gabriela", de Lima Barreto, abordam os riscos, os conflitos, a solidão e a aventura no Rio de Janeiro. Sensíveis às questões sociais então vigentes, esses escritores, por meio da crítica e da ironia, apresentaram as contradições da cidade e da própria modernidade brasileira.
