For some twenty-five years after 1949, China did not exist and the country was only rediscovered in the 1970s. As China looks set to soar in the new millennium, there is an urgency to understand the world's most populous economy with a billion plus people. This book aims to shed light on the country's rapid industrialization and internationalization by looking at questions such as: Can China sustain its accelerated rate of growth? Can labor supply be sustained at a relatively low wage rate? Can inflow of foreign direct investment be sustained at a high rate, given the consequent exposure to inflation? Will China's domestic market absorb its own output as the limit on the ability to export manufactures to overseas markets is reached? Is China's currency undervalued? Given China's foreign exchange reserves, should the country have a freely convertible currency?

For more than half a century, East Asia has been the most dynamic and resilient economic region in the world. Following Japan's success in its post-World War Two reconstruction and industrialisation, a good number of East Asian economies flourished. The latest and the most extraordinary case is that of China's rapid economic development. As the largest economy in the region, China pledged to play a leading role in promoting regional economic prosperity. China's economic relations with its East Asian neighbours have been complex and have nonetheless grown in strength. This edited volume examines China's key economic relations and efforts in participating and promoting economic globalisation, as well as the overall development of East Asian economic integration. This book focuses on China's importance and efforts in East Asian economic integration by examining the changing patterns of the growing East Asian production network, reviewing the process and achievement of China's efforts in internationalising its currency and evaluating the efforts to internationalise Chinese firms. It elaborates China's economic relations with individual neighbouring East Asian economies such as Taiwan, Hong Kong, ASEAN, Korea and Japan. It discusses the political economy aspect of East Asian economic integration and describes the origins and processes of East Asian economic integration from the Flying Geese model to the numerous free trade arrangements involving the region.

This book analyses the developmental trajectories of China up to and into the new millennium. Focusing on the substance and underlying forces of change, it considers issues and developments in monetary policy, foreign exchange policy, the trade regime, state-owned enterprise reform, regional economic development as well as social changes, particularly those related to social welfare reform and the Internet. The book also covers economic and political developments in 'Greater China', particularly the prospects of reunification after Taiwan's presidential elections, and analyses the core issues and challenges in China's contemporary relations with the USA, Japan, South-East Asia and Europe.

The 1990s have witnessed a strong trend in different parts of the world especially the developed countries to form regional trading blocs, such as EU and NAFTA. The formation of these trade blocs has led to substantial diversion of trade and investment away from the rest of the world economy affecting the growth process in other regions that are not part of these blocs. The Asian countries on the other hand have faithfully pursued multilateralism in their trade and investment policy except for few subregional attempts such as the ASEAN Free Trade Area (AFTA) or the South Asia Free Trade Agreement (SAFTA). However, there is now a growing recognition in Aisa of the importance of regional economic integration for generating growth impulses from within, especially in the wake of the East Asian Crisis. Against that backdrop, this book makes a case for an Asian Economic Community that would be broader in coverage than the current programs for economic cooperation in the region. It argues that the community is evolving in a phased manner with Japan, ASEAN, China, India and Korea (JACIK) providing the initial core group that can be expanded to cover other parts of Asia subsequently, as in Europe. The analysis presented in the book shows that regional economic integration could act as a new engine of growth and generate hundreds of billions of additional output and assist Asia regain its place in the world economy that it had until the eighteenth century. The book also examines the emerging patterns of regional integration in JACIK region and presents an analysis of the potential and prospects of cooperation in the areas of trade, money and finance, technology and investments. This book will be useful to Asian policy-makers and scholars looking for a vision in making the 21st century an Asian century.

The most remarkable phenomenon in Asia in the 21st century is arguably the economic rise of China and India. Amazingly, the two most populous countries in the world are uplifting millions of their citizens annually from poverty through rapid economic growth. What is the impact on the region, given the ascendance of China and India? There are at least two possible outcomes: the rise of the two great Asian powers may challenge the US and instill fear among the smaller countries in Asia, or, China and India will act as new economic dynamos that will benefit the region even if US economic presence in the region is to decline in the future. This book explores the opportunities and obstacles to a “harmonious” region underpinned by the rise of China and India.

This book investigates long-term development issues for members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). It finds that with the proper policy mix—including domestic structural reforms and bold initiatives for regional integration—ASEAN has the potential to reach by 2030 the average quality of life enjoyed today in advanced economies and to fulfill its aspirations to become a resilient, inclusive, competitive, and harmonious (RICH) region. Key challenges moving forward are to enhance macroeconomic and financial stability, support equitable growth, promote competitiveness and innovation, and protect the environment. Overcoming these challenges to build a truly borderless economic region implies eliminating remaining barriers to the flow of goods, services, and production factors; strengthening competitiveness and the institutional framework; and updating some governing principles. But ASEAN should not merely copy the European Union. It must maintain its flexibility and pragmatism without creating a bloated regional bureaucracy. The study’s main message is that through closer integration, ASEAN can form a partnership for achieving shared prosperity in the region and around the globe.
