Aslak syntyi 7.7.1934 Lapissa Saamenmaalla. Lapinsodan melskeissä Aslak Rakka jäi orvoksi. Tamperelaiset Björkbergit, Aslakin adoptiovanhemmat antoivat nuorukaiselle uuden nimen Aleksander. Valitettavasti kaikki paha toistui 50-luvulla. Aleksander jäi uudelleen orvoksi. Niin Aleksanderista eli Santeri Björkbergistä tuli Tervahaudan kylän erakko. Taitonsa Santeri oli perinyt saamelaiselta isältään, käytössään hänellä oli rumpu, ainoa muisto isästään. Vanha rumpu kantoi mukanaan jotain kirousta, ainakin Aslak aavisteli sellaista. Vankilaan jouduttuaan Santeri kirjoitti värikkäät muistelot elämästään. Saatuaan työnsä valmiiksi hän päätti kuolla. Se olisi ainoa keino päästä pois vankilasta. Kuolemansa jälkeen Santeri tulisi käyttämään alkuperäistä nimeään Aslak. Aslak jatkaa siitä, mihin Santeri jäi. Kuolemasta. Erinäisten kiperien käänteiden päätteeksi Aslak pääsee Tervahaudan kylälle Santerin Lappiin. Aslakilla on edessään velvoitteita. Lupaukset on täytettävä, ehdottomasti! Niistä pidetään kiinni. Vankilassa vainajat olivat tunkeutuneet Santerin uniin, vainonneet yö yön perään. Viikkoja. Lopulta Santeri oli joutunut taipumaan, antoi periksi, jotta painajaiset vihdoin päättyisivät. Vainajat olivat saaneet Santerilta lupaukset. Oli tiedossa, että Santeri oli mies, joka tunnollisesti pitää lupauksensa. Aina. Aslakinakin. Erikoisen rumpunsa ja harvinaisten taitojensa avulla Aslak ottaa yhteyden tuonpuoleiseen, ilman tarkempia tietoja ei lupauksia voisi täyttää. Lennokas tarina valottaa pienen ihmisen näkökulmaa ahneuteen. Aslakilla on hyvä sydän, hän tahtoo omalla persoonallisella tyylillään pelkkää hyvää kaikille. Paitsi ahneille.
