Perhaps more than any other nineteenth-century Russian writer, Dostoevskii’s continuing popularity rests on his contemporary relevance. The prophetic streak in his creativity gives him the same lasting appeal as dystopian novelists such as Zamiatin and Orwell whom he influenced and whose ethical concerns he anticipated. Religious themes are prominent in his work, too, and, though he was a believer, his interest seems to lie in the tension between faith and unbelief, which was felt as keenly in the Russia of his time as in our own. The nature of Dostoevskii’s art also continues to be debated. The older tendency to disparage his literary method has given way to a recognition of the originality of his techniques, without which his ideological concerns would not have emerged with such thought-provoking clarity. The chapters which comprise this volume address these issues in a range of Dostoevskii’s works, from shorter classics, such as House of the Dead and Notes from Underground to great novels such as Crime and Punishment and The Brothers Karamazov. This work will be of use to scholars and students of Dostoevskii at all levels as well as to those with an interest in nineteenth-century literature more generally.

Key dimensions of Dostoevskii's writing and life are explored in this collection of specially commissioned essays. While remaining accessible to an undergraduate and non-specialist readership, the essays as a whole seek to renegotiate the terms in which Dostoevskii and his works are to be approached. This is achieved by replacing the conventional 'life and works' format by one that seeks instead to foreground key aspects of the cultural context in which those works were produced. Contributors trace the often complex relationship between those aspects and the processes accompanying the creation of Dostoevskii's art. They examine topics such as Dostoevskii's relation to folk literature, money, religion, the family and science. The essays are well supported by supplementary material including a chronology of the period and detailed guides to further reading. Altogether the volume provides an invaluable resource for scholars and students.

This Casebook is a collection of interpretations of Crime and Punishment. The selection not only reflects earlier work by major critics in the field, but also more recent studies. At the same time the choice of critical approaches has been made on the basis of covering the novel's various aspects: Dostoevsky's debt to other novelists in the European tradition; his roots as a writer in the so-called "Natural School" of the 1840s with its emphasis on the theme of the city; the thematic and symbolic structure of the novel itself; the psychology of the hero; the philosophical content of the novel and its relationship to contemporary thought; the novel's religious dimension. This latter approach has long been established in western criticism, but the two essays with which the Casebook concludes are by modern Russian scholars, who examine the novel in the light of their own Orthodox tradition.

F M Dostoevsky written by Miriam T. Šajkovic and has been published by University of Pennsylvania Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-11-11 with Education categories.

"Dostoevsky is the unrivaled and perspicacious seer of the human mind and heart; he emerges as a great friend and teacher of humanity. He has dearly read the signs of our times, for he lived through the agonizing doubts and despairs of our present spiritual crisis. His sincerity, his spiritual heroism, and his moral courage have never been questioned. " With these words, the author of the present work, Miriam T. Šajković, begins her initial attempt to acquaint American readers with Dostoevsky's philosophy of education. The views of Dostoevsky on educational problems in his own time have been historically explored by Šajković in relation to nineteenth-century Russia and the events which shaped its attitudes and customs. The author has studied the central aspects of Dostoevsky's system in order to extract from them a contribution toward the formulation of a philosophy of education suitable for the present time. Šajković proposes that a new synthesis of Dostoevsky's thought and contemporary American pedagogy be effected for the purpose of reinstating serious reflection upon modern morals and religion. The book contains an annotated bibliography, conveniently divided into sections according to various high school reading levels; selections from his letters, arranged under topic headings; a chronological table of his works; and a master bibliography of primary and secondary sources. A unique and valuable contribution to both philosophy of education and Dostoevsky commentary, Dostoevsky: His Image of Man will be of lasting worth to professional educators in particular, as well as students of literature in general.

Notes from the Underground by fyodor dostoyevsky A predecessor to such monumental works such as Crime and Punishment and The Brothers Karamazov, Notes From Underground represents a turning point in Dostoyevsky's writing towards the more political side. In this work we follow the unnamed narrator of the story, who disillusioned by the oppression and corruption of the society in which he lives withdraws from that society into the underground. A dark and politically charged novel, "Notes From Underground" shows Dostoyevsky at his best. We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection.
