"The Tectonics of China: Data, Maps and Evolution" presents the regional geological and petroleum surveys of China, the author's original tectonic data, and research results of Chinese and international scientists (more than 1500 references) from the last three decades. It examines the main developments of geological evolution, a series of tectonic events in the overall geological history, 13 tectonic maps of the entire continent of Asia in different tectonic epochs, and a general discussion of the main tectonic characteristics of the Chinese continental plate. This book also intensively discusses the Mesozoic-Cenozoic tectonics and intraplate deformations, which control the majority of ore deposits and oil-gas reservoirs and have a tremendous influence on the climates and natural disasters on the continent. Some important tectonic theory problems are discussed, such as the mechanisms of the widespread intraplate deformation, the variation of lithosphere thickness, the existence of mantle plumes, the dynamic mechanisms for global tectonics, and the author's proposed hypotheses on mantle plumes and meteorite impacts. The book is intended for researchers and geologists working at universities, on geological surveys, for mining or petroleum companies, and for graduate students of geology and mineral resources. Tianfeng Wan is Professor at the China University of Geosciences, Beijing, China.

Anyone studying the geology and tectonics of China and who is not able to read Chinese will need to have a copy of this book: Ceotectonic Evolution of China and a companion copy of the Tectonic Map of China, scale 1:4000,000. Professor Huang Jiqing and his collaborators from the Institute of Geology, Chinese Academy of Geological Sciences have provided the English-speaking earth scientists with an extremely valuable tool that can be used towards understanding the geo b;;y of China. The introductory chapter is necessary to read prior to effective use of the material discussed in other chapters as it clearly presents the philosophy of this school of tectonics. The collaborators of the book acknowledge the important changes have been brough about by the plate tectonics theory but do not fully incorporate these ideas into their discussion. The book and map are testimony to the tremendous amount of geologic work accomplished by Chinese geologists in the past fourty years. As our Chinese collea gues begin to publish more English summaries such as this, it will become apparent to the rest of the world the vast amount of geologic mapping along with supportive stratigraphy and geophysics that has already been accomplished. Nearly all major non Chinese tracts on tectonic synthesis of the world treat China in only a cursory fashio)1 because so little is known of the area. With this text and map, future world tectonic synthesis can no longer afford to leave China out of the picture.

Early Continent Evolution of the North China Craton discusses the tectono-thermal regimes of the early continental crust in the North China Craton (NCC) from the Hadean to the early Paleoproterozoic, reconstructing the evolutional framework, and facilitating comprehensive understanding of the early continent evolution of the NCC. The book systematically summarizes the Neoarchean metamorphism of the NCC and discusses the implications for the tectonic models of the NCC, through compiling evolutional information of the Hadean to the early Paleoproterozoic sequences in the NCC. This allows for comprehensive summarizations and discussions on the tectonic framework of the NCC during this critical period. Researchers, academics and students in geology (especially Precambrian Geology), geomorphology, geophysics and geological engineering will benefit from using this book in applying tectonic models to other cratonic blocks globally, and will understand evolutional information of the largest and oldest cratonic block in China. Completely covers all key issues and research frontiers of the early continental evolution of the North China Craton (NCC), from the Hadean to the early Paleoproterozoic Systematically summarizes the Neoarchaean metamorphism of the NCC and discusses the implications for tectonic models Includes discussion on controversial views on tectonic regimes of the NCC during the Archean to early Paleoproterozoic, with objective conclusions

Isotope chronology has developed over the last 100 years and has advanced in response to the requirements of geological research. Despite the technical, instrumental, and methodological advances in geochronology, accurate and precise dating of geological materials, processes, and events is still needed. This book highlights new findings on tectonochronology, and contributes to the theory and methods of several important scientific topics, such as the formation of syn-kinematic minerals, development of systematic methods of dating deformation and their use, criteria for dateable minerals and methods for direct and precise dating, the relationship between mineral formation/evolution and isotope chronology, influences of strain and fluid on isotopic diffusion, and improved understanding of stress, fluid, and temperature in earth sciences. This book includes cases from Chinese geology that refer to dating of deformation, tectonic evolution and environmental change. These methods can be applied to other earth science topics and geological studies worldwide.

The ihsan Ketin NATO Advanced Study Institute on the Tectonic Evolution of the Tethyan Region was conceived in 1982 in Veszprem, Hungary, when three of the organizers (B. C. B. , L. H. R. and A. M. C. 9. ) had come together for a meeting on the tectonics of the Pannonian basin. All three of us had experience in the Tethyan belt and all three of us had been for some time deploring the lack of communication among workers of this immense orogenic belt. Much new work had been completed in such previously little-known areas as Turkey, Iran, Afghanistan, the People's Republic of China, the entire Himalayan region, as well as new work in the European parts of the chain. Also, ironically, parts of the belt had just been closed to field work for political reasons, so it seemed as if the time was right to sit back and consider what had been done so far. Because the Istanbul group had had an interest in the whole of the Tethyan belt and because that ancient city was more centrally locElted with excellent opportunities to see both Palaeo- and Neo-Tethyan rocks in a weekend excursion, we thought that Istanbul was a natural place for such a meeting, not mentioning its own considerable attractions for the would-be contributors. A happy coincidence was that Prof.
