Seminar paper from the year 2012 in the subject Literature - Modern Literature, grade: 1,3, University of Göttingen (Philosophische Fakultät), course: Beyond Principle and Philosophy: Edgar Allan Poe as an American Author, language: English, abstract: In this paper, it will be argued that this emphasis on visual sensations is directly related to the violence against women as it exposes the murderers' motives and drives, their course of action as well as their attempt to then distort the reader's view of the truth in order to cover their involvement. For the discussion of this thesis Poe's short stories "The Oval Portrait," "Morella", "Berenice" and especially "Ligeia" will be considered. Many of Edgar Allan Poe's short stories deal with a fixation on dying women as he famously states in "The Philosophy of Composition: "death, then, of a beautiful woman is, unquestionably, the most poetical topic in the world" (1621). The death of those women is often violent as they are murdered by a male character as a result of an "emotional estrangement between the male protagonist and a fated female" (Kennedy 118). Interestingly, the characters and the circumstances surrounding those deaths are described with an emphasis on the "lexical field of sight" (Marín-Ruiz 58) so that already "a cursory exposure to Poe's fiction leaves a strong impression of his recurrent emphasis on the eye" (Scheick 80). Detailed accounts of eyes, glances, gazes and vision keep reappearing in the selected stories, so that sight becomes one of the key elements of the tales.

This collection offers six critical essays on the topic of psychology in Edgar Allan Poe. It came together as a response to a visible absence of this subject in recent scholarship. The volume presents Edgar Allan Poe as one of the pioneers in psychology, who often anticipated major theoretical trends and ideas in psychology in his incessant explorations of the relationship between behavior and the psyche. Scrutinizing serial killer narratives, obsessive narratives through Jungian unconscious, Lacanian Das Ding, doppelgängers, intersubjectivity, and the interrelationship between the material world and imaginative faculties, the essays reveal the richness and the complexity of Poe's work and its pertinence to contemporary culture. With contributions by Gerardo Del Guercio, Phillip Grayson, Sean J. Kelly, Rachel McCoppin, Tatiana Prorokova, and Karen J. Renner.

Seminar paper from the year 2021 in the subject American Studies - Literature, grade: 1,0, Humboldt-University of Berlin (Amerikanistik/Anglistik), course: Paradigms of American Literature: E.A. Poe, language: English, abstract: In this paper, I will examine the numerous symbols of transience Poe uses in "The Masque of the Red Death" and analyze what they represent and how they contribute or influence the plot of the story. Therefore, I will refer to the work of various literary and social scientists and critics such as Jeffrey Meyers and Sabrina Laurent, but also other scholars from different fields. In addition, I will depict that the events within the short story are intended to give an insight into the negative behavior of humans in order to serve as an example of what morally reprehensible behavior can result in. Nowadays it is common knowledge that Edgar Allan Poe is one of the most famous representatives when it comes to the involvement of personal experiences and the placement of hidden symbols in short stories and poems. The Masque of the Red Death is no exception and also represents one of Poe's most popular tales. It first appeared in Graham's Magazine in May 1842 and, due to the time it was written, was part of the so-called "Masquerades" along with three other of Poe's stories. The short story contains a decent amount of symbolism and has therefore often been interpreted differently by many literary scholars over the past years. It was investigated where the origins of the story may lie, which parallels can be drawn to the real world, what basically inspired the story and what morals can be derived from it. But many attempts have also been made to identify the true nature of the disease of the same name. Therefore, the variety of publications on this work is very broad and thus offers different answers and analysis approaches. Still, it is certain that the short story follows many traditions of Gothic fiction and is often analyzed as an allegory about the inevitability of death.

No American author of the early 19th century enjoys a larger international audience than Edgar Allan Poe. Widely translated, read, and studied, he occupies an iconic place in global culture. Such acclaim would have gratified Poe, who deliberately wrote for "the world at large" and mocked the provincialism of strictly nationalistic themes. Partly for this reason, early literary historians cast Poe as an outsider, regarding his dark fantasies as extraneous to American life and experience. Only in the 20th century did Poe finally gain a prominent place in the national canon. Changing critical approaches have deepened our understanding of Poe's complexity and revealed an author who defies easy classification. New models of interpretation have excited fresh debates about his essential genius, his subversive imagination, his cultural insight, and his ultimate impact, urging an expansive reconsideration of his literary achievement. Edited by leading experts J. Gerald Kennedy and Scott Peeples, this volume presents a sweeping reexamination of Poe's work. Forty-five distinguished scholars address Poe's troubled life and checkered career as a "magazinist," his poetry and prose, and his reviews, essays, opinions, and marginalia. The chapters provide fresh insights into Poe's lasting impact on subsequent literature, music, art, comics, and film and illuminate his radical conception of the universe, science, and the human mind. Wide-ranging and thought-provoking, this Handbook reveals a thoroughly modern Poe, whose timeless fables of peril and loss will continue to attract new generations of readers and scholars.

A rich collection of interdisciplinary essays, this book explores the question: what is to be found at the intersection of the sensorium and law’s empire? Examining the problem of how legal rationalities try to grasp what can only be sensed through the body, these essays problematize the Cartesian framework that has long separated the mind from the body, reason from feeling and the human from the animal. In doing so, they consider how the sensorium can operate, variously, as a tool of power or as a means of countering the exercise of regulatory force. The senses, it is argued, operate as a vector for the implication of subjects in legal webs, but also as a powerful site of resistance to legal definition and determination. From the sensorium of animals to technologically mediated perception, the ways in which the law senses and the ways in which senses are brought before the law invite a questioning of the categories of liberal humanism. And, as this volume demonstrates, this questioning opens up the both interesting and important possibility of imagining other sensual subjectivities.

Seminar paper from the year 2018 in the subject American Studies - Literature, grade: 2,0, http://www.uni-jena.de/ (Institut für Anglistik), course: Academic Writing, language: English, abstract: This paper will argue that the narrator in "Black Cat" by Edgar Allan Poe is a psychopath. Edgar Allen Poe is well-known for his short stories and his gothic style. He was born in 1809 in the USA and died in 1849. After studying languages at the University of Virginia he went to the army in the end of the 1820s and started to write short stories in the 1830s. The narrator of "Black Cat" has been analyzed by different authors. Fisher, for instance, has the intention to figure out the motivation of Poe. His book analyses different short stories with diverse topics. For "Black Cat", he chooses a psychological view. This focus is close to the topic of that work. However, the analysis of Fisher is superficial, because he comes to the conclusion that the narrator is emotionally fragile, without giving a deep argumentation. The most detailed work is given by Susan Amper and Harold Bloom. Different topics are analyzed; strategies for the interpretation of "Black Cat" were given and different approaches to understanding the narrator are mentioned. That means the story could be read supernatural, psychological or skeptical. Even so, the argumentation could be deeper. For this reason, the psychological analysis of the narrator with a psychological test could be seen as desideratum. Filling that gap, by analyzing him on a psychological way, is the main target of this work.
