This clear, accessible volume provides a comprehensive overview of the ongoing debate over the determining factors of and key influences on employment growth and labor market training, education, and related policies in the United States. Drawing on the work of distinguished labor economists, the chapters tackle questions posed by job and skill demands in the "new high-tech economy" and explore sources of employment growth; productivity growth and its implications for future employment; government mandates, labor costs, and employment; and labor force demographics, income inequality, and returns to human capital. These topics are central concerns for government, which must judge every prospective policy proposal by its effects on employment growth. Washington keeps at least one eye firmly on the jobs picture, and public officials at every level are constantly aware of the issues surrounding American job security. The jobs issue reaches beyond this focus on the unemployment rate and on total employment, including the rate at which employment is seen as growing, the growth of real wages, the security of employment, returns to human capital, uncertainty about the education and training best suited for a world of rapidly changing economic conditions, and the distribution of the gains from growth across economic classes and population groups.

The digital revolution, globalisation and demographic changes are transforming labour markets at a time when policy makers are also struggling with persistently slow productivity and wage growth and high levels of income inequality. The new OECD Jobs Strategy provides a comprehensive framework and detailed policy analysis and recommendations to help countries promote not only strong job creation but also foster job quality and inclusiveness as central policy priorities, while emphasising the importance of resilience and adaptability for good economic and labour market performance in a rapidly changing world of work. The key message is that flexibility-enhancing policies in product and labour markets are necessary but not sufficient. Policies and institutions that protect workers, foster inclusiveness and allow workers and firms to make the most of ongoing changes are also needed to promote good and sustainable outcomes

World Employment written by International Labour Office and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1995 with Employment (Economic theory) categories.

The impact of globalization of the world economy on employment throughout the world was examined by determining the causes and effects of the reduction in economic growth that has occurred in most developed and developing countries since 1973. The following were among the factors considered: international inequality; new technologies; effects of globalization on labor demand and labor standards; and policy responses to globalization (trade and industrialization; foreign direct investment, adjustment measures, labor market regulation). The effects of reduced economic growth on a given country's employment patterns/levels were found to depend on that country's way of responding to inadequate growth. The view that labor market rigidity is the main cause of poor employment performance was refuted. It was concluded that, although globalization generates real employment problems (unemployment, declining relative wages, and reduced job prospects), its potential benefits far outweigh its costs. The optimal strategy for encouraging economic development in a global economy was said to be to reap the considerable gains of continued globalization in terms of higher output and efficiency while developing appropriate national and international policies to deal with the social problems engendered by globalization. Contains 42 tables/figures and 216 endnotes.) (MN)
