This book offers an international perspective on the growing interest worldwide in lifelong learning, particularly as it relates to learning beyond compulsory education and initial occupational preparation: across working life. Much of this interest is driven by key social and economic imperatives associated with the changing requirements of work and working life, the transformation of many occupations and lengthening working lives. The concerns in lifelong learning are also associated with individuals being able to engage in learning about cultural and social topics and practices that they had not so far. It is important to understand how this learning can be assessed, recognized and certified. Many in workforces across the world learn much of the knowledge that is required to maintain their employability through that work. Yet, that learning and that competency remains without recognition and certification while this could be particularly helpful for individuals seeking to sustain their employability or to extend their work into new occupations or workplaces. The first section of this book sets out the overall project and outlines the key concepts and issues. It illustrates why there is a need for promoting and recognizing lifelong learning and explains some of the terminology, concepts and key considerations. The second section informs about a range of policies and practices that are currently being deployed or have been deployed across a range of countries within Europe, Scandinavia and Asia. The last section comprises of contributions emphasizing the ways in which the assessment of workers learning takes place in different occupational contexts and different cultural contexts. The final chapter outlines how a systemic approach to recognizing lifelong learning might progress for a country which is promoting a continuing education and training system largely outside of tertiary education institutions.

This book, along with its companion volume Assessing Reading 2: Changing Practice in Classrooms, was originally conceived as the major outcome from an international seminar on reading assessment held in England. It focuses particularly on theoretical and methodological issues, though with a clear series of links to practices in assessment, especially state and national approaches to classroom-based assessment in the USA, the UK and in Australia, at both primary and secondary levels. Chapters offer new perspectives on the theories that underlie the development and interpretation of reading assessments, national assessments and classroom-based assessment, challenging readers to think in different ways.

More than just a book, Play Your Bigger Game is a concept that will take you only nine minutes to understand but a lifetime to play. It was designed from the premise that life itself is one big game. And, if it is, then why not play one that excites, fulfills, and challenges you to develop and express your talents completely? By the way, there’s nothing wrong with wanting that. It’s a natural expression of who we are, and since each of us is blessed with talents, we’re naturally hungry to develop and put them to use. Too often we suppress that desire for full engagement and self-expression because we think it’s the grown-up thing to do. We consciously turn down our hunger dials, because we’re afraid of expecting too much from life. We also think: If I settle for less, I won’t be disappointed. Play Your Bigger Game was created to counteract that self-limiting, fear-based approach to life. It’s also designed to keep you forever in play, meaning that you’ll never be stuck again, since you’ll always have the game board to guide your next move. Michelangelo said, "The great danger for most of us lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short but in setting our aim too low and hitting the mark." This book is not just about making a living; it’s about making an impact. Curiously enough, I find that once players begin to make a positive impact, their incomes often rise, too. Still, if you’re interested in simply making a living and just surviving in life, I’m afraid that this book is not for you. If you want to make an impact in the world and thrive in your life while earning a very good living, please read on. The purpose of this book is to: Reveal the Bigger Game player you already are, help you find the Bigger Games that excite and challenge you to fully deploy all of your energy and gifts, teach you to consciously design the person you’re destined to become, allow you to feed the hunger in your soul, help you to make a major impact, and allow you to leave a lasting legacy.

After all the hours of studying, reading and preparation, the nights spent revising and the writing and re-writing of assignments, ‘success’ for university students can often be represented with a single grade or digit, summing up a wide range of activities. The authors of this timely book ask how fair that assessment is. This book is about a long-ignored determinant of student satisfaction, concerning the perception of how fairly students are judged, marked, ranked and rewarded for demonstrating their capabilities at university. In the high stakes competitive field of higher education, students are increasingly positioned as customers whose views on their university experience are considered vitally important. Yet paradoxically, little research has been undertaken to find out more about how students decide whether they have been treated fairly and what they do about it. This book fills a major gap in our understanding of these issues, responding to four key questions: Why is the assessment of students’ capabilities the core business of universities? What are the main sources of student frustration with assessment arrangements? What do students do when they think they have been treated unfairly? What can be done to promote fair assessment at university? In doing so, this book goes beyond the superficial consideration of university assessment as a ‘necessary requirement’ by unravelling the underlying issues that really count – what is considered fair assessment and what is not. Towards Fairer University Assessment will be of interest to higher education academics, administrators and managers, researchers in the areas of education policy and politics, as well as advanced undergraduate and postgraduate students.
