"This paper deals with a comparative assessment of commitments between WTO members and acceding countries in both the goods and services sector. The study finds that, for the services sector, the commitments of post-Uruguay Round acceding countries far exceed those of their WTO member counterparts." "The study also provides country specific commitment comparisons after controlling for the level of economic development of the countries. In conclusion, the authors make recommendations for reform of the process of accession, in light of the costs incurred by applicant countries, so as to produce more equitable outcomes."--BOOK JACKET.

In "Globalization Unveiled," the author provides an incisive exploration of the profound role the World Trade Organization (WTO) plays in the multifaceted realm of globalization. This meticulously researched tome offers both a historical perspective on the evolution of global trade systems and a critical analysis of the WTO's successes, challenges, and enduring influence on the international economic landscape. The narrative begins with a foundational understanding of the very concept of globalization and the historical precedents that paved the way for the establishment of the WTO in 1995. From the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) to the Uruguay Round, the author offers readers a comprehensive overview of the journey towards creating a unified body to govern international trade. At the heart of "Globalization Unveiled" is a detailed examination of the WTO's operations and its core principles, such as most-favored-nation status and transparency. The author explores the intricacies of trade negotiations, the dispute settlement mechanism, and the increasingly important role of intellectual property rights in the age of information and technology. With a balanced and informed approach, the author delves into the successes of the WTO, highlighting its role in reducing global trade barriers, fostering economic cooperation, and promoting stability. He showcases how the organization has facilitated economic growth and development in various regions, bringing forth case studies that demonstrate the tangible benefits of a globalized trade system. Yet, the narrative doesn't shy away from the controversies and criticisms that surround the WTO. From concerns about sovereignty erosion and the marginalization of developing economies to debates about environmental protection and labor rights, "Globalization Unveiled" provides an objective assessment of the challenges faced by the organization. The author elucidates how, in many instances, the WTO has had to navigate the delicate balance between promoting free trade and addressing legitimate socio-economic concerns. In the concluding sections, the book contemplates the future trajectory of global trade and the role of the WTO in an ever-evolving international environment. With the rise of regional trade agreements, growing nationalistic sentiments, and unprecedented global challenges like climate change, what role can and should the WTO play in shaping the future of globalization? Engaging, insightful, and deeply informative, "Globalization Unveiled" serves as an essential guide to understanding the intricate dance of global trade dynamics and the pivotal role of the World Trade Organization. Perfect for students, policymakers, business professionals, and anyone curious about the forces that shape our interconnected world.

Bachelor Thesis from the year 2009 in the subject Business economics - Miscellaneous, grade: 1,3, Ruhr-University of Bochum (Lehrstuhl für internationale Wirtschaftsbeziehungen), language: English, abstract: International trade has soared in the last 30 years, and conseauently trade disputes have also been on the rise. The Dispute Settlement Body of the WTO serves as plattform in order to attenuate hurdles and misunderstandings. But what makes a country use the DSB? Both underlying structural variables and game theory related variables explain this. While the latter is held constant, this paper inquires in the influence played by structural variables such as GDP, population size, exports, etc, in order to determine why some countries tend to use the DSB and others don't. An index is then proposed to assess the procedural success of countries having participated in the DSB. Key words: WTO, DSB, international trade, procedural success, imports, exports.

This is primarily a textbook for graduate and upper-level undergraduate students of law. However, practising lawyers and policy-makers who are looking for an introduction to WTO law will also find it invaluable. The book covers both the institutional and substantive law of the WTO. While the treatment of the law is often quite detailed, the main aim of this textbook is to make clear the basic principles and underlying logic of WTO law and the world trading system. Each section contains questions and assignments, to allow students to assess their understanding and develop useful practical skills. At the end of each chapter there is a helpful summary, as well as an exercise on specific, true-to-life international trade problems.
