Back Analysis In Rock Engineering written by Shunsuke Sakurai and has been published by CRC Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-09-01 with Technology & Engineering categories.
This book provides practicing engineers working in the field of design, construction and monitoring of rock structures such as tunnels and slopes with technical information on how to design, how to excavate and how to monitor the structures during their construction. Based on the long-term engineering experiences of the author, field measurements together with back analyses are presented as the most powerful tools in rock engineering practice. One of the purposes of field measurements is to assess the stability of the rock structures during their construction. However, field measurement results are only numbers unless they are quantitatively interpreted, a process in which back analyses play an important role. The author has developed both the concepts of “critical strain” and of the “anisotropic parameter” of rocks, which can make it possible not only to assess the stability of the structures during their construction, but also to verify the validity of design parameters by the back analysis of field measurement results during the constructions. Based on the back analysis results, the design parameters used at a design stage could be modified if necessary. This procedure is called an “Observational method”, a concept that is entirely different from that of other structures such as bridges and buildings. It is noted that in general, technical books written for practicing engineers mainly focus on empirical approaches which are based on engineers’ experiences. In this book, however, no empirical approaches will be described, instead, all the approaches are based on simple rock mechanics theory. This book is the first to describe an observational method in rock engineering practice, which implies that the potential readers of this book must be practicing engineers working on rock engineering projects.

Scale Size And Structural Effects Of Rock Materials written by Shuren Wang and has been published by Woodhead Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-01-24 with Technology & Engineering categories.
Scale-Size and Structural Effects of Rock Materials presents the latest research on the scale-size and structural effects of rock materials, including test methods, innovative technologies, and applications in indoor testing, rock mechanics and rock engineering. Importantly, the book explains size-dependent failure criteria, including the multiaxial failure and Hoek-Brown failure criterion. Five chapters cover the size effect of rock samples, rock fracture toughness, scale effects of rock joints, microseismic monitoring and application, and structural effects of rock blocks. The book reflects on the scientific and technical challenges from extensive research in Australia and China. The title is innovative, practical and content-rich. It will be useful to mining and geotechnical engineers researching the scale-size and structural effects of rock materials, including test methods, innovative technologies and applications in indoor testing, rock mechanics, and engineering, and to those on-site technical specialists who need a reliable and up to date reference. - Presents the latest theory and research on the scale, size and structure of rock materials - Develops new methods for evaluating the scale-size dependency and structural effects of rock and rock-like materials - Describes new technologies in mining engineering, tunneling engineering and slope engineering - Provides an account of size-dependent failure criterion, including multiaxial and Hoek-Brown - Gives practical and theoretical insights based on extensive experience on Australian and Chinese geotechnical projects

Hydraulic Structures written by Sheng-Hong Chen and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-06-09 with Science categories.
This book discusses in detail the planning, design, construction and management of hydraulic structures, covering dams, spillways, tunnels, cut slopes, sluices, water intake and measuring works, ship locks and lifts, as well as fish ways. Particular attention is paid to considerations concerning the environment, hydrology, geology and materials etc. in the planning and design of hydraulic projects. It also considers the type selection, profile configuration, stress/stability calibration and engineering countermeasures, flood releasing arrangements and scouring protection, operation and maintenance etc. for a variety of specific hydraulic structures. The book is primarily intended for engineers, undergraduate and graduate students in the field of civil and hydraulic engineering who are faced with the challenges of extending our understanding of hydraulic structures ranging from traditional to groundbreaking, as well as designing, constructing and managing safe, durable hydraulic structures that are economical and environmentally friendly.

Computational Geomechanics And Hydraulic Structures written by Sheng-Hong Chen and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-06-21 with Science categories.
This book presents recent research into developing and applying computational tools to estimate the performance and safety of hydraulic structures from the planning and construction stage to the service period. Based on the results of a close collaboration between the author and his colleagues, friends, students and field engineers, it shows how to achieve a good correlation between numerical computation and the actual in situ behavior of hydraulic structures. The book’s heuristic and visualized style disseminates the philosophy and road map as well as the findings of the research. The chapters reflect the various aspects of the three typical and practical methods (the finite element method, the block element method, the composite element method) that the author has been working on and made essential contributions to since the 1980s. This book is an advanced continuation of Hydraulic Structures by the same author, published by Springer in 2015.
