This volume describes cutting-edge methods and strategies for assessing a comprehensive array of childhood disorders, child health risks, and adolescent problems. Contributors highlight the ongoing interplay among behaviors, cognitions, and affects as they unfold within the young person's social network. Each chapter presents a conceptual framework for understanding the problem at hand, discusses assessment procedures that can be used to inform clinical interventions, and reviews the available empirical data. A major emphasis is placed on the family and the broader social environment, both as a context for understanding the child's strengths and weaknesses and as a focus for assessment and intervention. Also addressed are such contemporary themes as the need for developmental and cultural sensitivity in assessment, combining categorical diagnosis with dimensional classification, assessment as a decision-making process, and prevention-oriented assessments.

Handbook Of Assessment In Childhood Psychopathology written by Cynthia L. Frame and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-11-21 with Psychology categories.

One of the most important practical problems in child psychology and psychia try is the differential diagnosis of emotional disorders. Until recently, the gener al mode of assessment had been to apply to children the characteristics of psychopathology that were evident in adults. In addition, there had been few assessment tools available for use with children aside from modified versions of adult instruments. Understandably, this approach was controversial, and dissat isfaction with it led to the more recent knowledge that adult and child problems may be manifested quite differently. The third edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders takes these factors into account much more extensively than previous editions. Furthermore, a great deal of research on methodology in child assessment procedures has emerged recently. Yet, in spite of these advances, practicing clinicians are still frequently at a loss in moving from the characteristics of the disturbed child before them to the final assign ment of a psychiatric diagnosis. The focus of this book is to outline the various methods of viewing and categorizing the wide range childhood psycho pathology, with special emphasis on the end product of making a differential diagnosis. Our goal was to make this book unique in several ways. First, we attempted to cover a wider range of disorders than is typical in currently available hand books.

Childhood Disorders written by Philip C. Kendall and has been published by Psychology Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2000 with Anxiety disorders categories.

In Childhood Disorders, Philip C. Kendall provides an up-to-date summary of the current information about the psychological disorders of childhood - their causes, nature and course - together with discussion and evaluation of the major models that guide psychological thinking about the disorders. Drawing on the research literature and case studies from his own clinical work, Kendall describes each of the major childhood disorders. He goes on to give a detailed consideration of the criteria used to make the diagnoses, a presentation of the latest research findings on the nature of the disorder, and an overview of the methods used and evaluations conducted for the treatment of the disorders. Throughout, the range of normal behavioural variations is set as the backdrop against which to make judgements about psychological disorders, and the role of the family in the onset and course of psychological difficulties is explored. Within the coverage of the treatments of childhood disorders, emphasis is placed upon those treatments that have been empirically evaluated and found to be effective in producing beneficial change for the children. In the end, a series of provocative questions are raised and the reader is asked to recognise and think about the personal and social implications of the decisions that we make regarding how we deal with the disorders of childhood. Childhood Disorders will provide an accessible, up-to-date introduction to the field for both students and professionals alike.
