Blame Teachers written by Steven P. Jones and has been published by IAP this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-08-01 with Education categories.

There is a story going around about the public schools and the people who teach in them—a story about how awful our nation’s teachers are and why we should blame teachers for the poor state of our public schools. But is the story about teachers right or fair? Why do so many people point fingers at teachers and seem to resent them so much? Blame Teachers: The Emotional Reasons for Educational Reform examines why many people blame teachers for what they understand to be the poor state of our schools. Blame comes easily to many people when they read about poor student performance and how “protected” teachers are by teachers’ unions and tenure policies. And with blame comes resentment, and with resentment comes demands for all kinds of educational reform—calls for more standardized testing, merit pay, charter schools, and all the rest. And we expect teachers to like and accept all the reforms being proposed. Conceiving educational reform out of blame and resentment aimed at teachers does no good for teachers, students, or schools. Blame Teachers outlines many of the strange and unacceptable assumptions about teaching and the purposes of education contained in these educational reforms. Intended for teachers, teacher education students, policymakers and the larger public, Blame Teachers suggests much better and more productive conversations we can have with teachers—conversations much more likely to improve teaching and learning in classrooms. The book argues for conversations with teachers that don’t begin or end with blame and resentment. In this lively, personal meditation on what it means to be a teacher, Steven Jones demonstrates how an emotional, unreasoned ‘blame game’ directed at teachers by educational reformers today is undercutting the future of the nation’s children. It is doing so by threatening to deprive them of teachers as contrasted with by?the?numbers technicians. Today’s reformers neglect the philosopher Spinoza’s time honored insight, that a person in the grip of emotion is “in human bondage” and simply cannot see the truth of things. Can educators themselves, in tandem with knowledgeable members of the public, transform the reformers’ dogmatic, harmful narrative about our teachers? Jones’ thoughtful study will surely help in this much?needed effort. ~ David T. Hansen, Weinberg Professor in the Historical and Philosophical Foundations of Education, Teachers College

Impression management theory has been popular in sociology and social psychology for many years. This volume offers the first comprehensive application of impression management theory to organizational settings. Researchers and practitioners in organizational settings have recently been using this theory as an explanatory model to focus on the roles and identities that "social actors" utilize in interpersonal situations. The theory of impression management provides a framework for the techniques and strategies people use in order to look good as well as the excuses and justifications they employ to avoid looking bad.

The Discursive Construction Of Blame written by James Murphy and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-08-02 with Language Arts & Disciplines categories.

This book examines the language of public inquiries to reveal how blame is assigned, avoided, negotiated and discussed in this quasi-legal setting. In doing so, the author adds a much-needed linguistic perspective to the study of blame – previously the reserve of moral philosophers, sociologists and psychologists – at a time when public inquiries are being convened with increasing frequency. While the stated purpose of a public inquiry is rarely to apportion blame, this work reveals how blame is nevertheless woven into the fabric of the activity and how it is constructed by the language of the participants. Its chapters systematically analyse the establishment of inquiries, their questioning patterns, how blame can be avoided by witnesses, how blame is assigned or not by an inquiry’s panel and how such blame may result in public apologies. The author concludes with an engaging discussion on the value of public inquiries in civic life and suggestions for changes to the processes of public inquiries. This book will appeal to readers with a general interest in public and political language; in addition to scholars across the disciplines of communication, media studies, politics, sociology, social policy, philosophy, psychology, linguistics, rhetoric, public relations and public affairs.

Are you tired of anger management programs that are long on theory and short on practical steps to actually manage your anger? Then this is the book you need. Drawing on newly pioneered techniques in the burgeoning field of positive psychology, the authors share a comprehensive twelve-week anger management program. They share meaningful insights, including why it’s beneficial to transfer your desire to do something to an outside source (such as the judicial system), why choosing not to harm others makes it less likely they’ll harm you, and how cultivating a spirit of optimism can eliminate angry outbursts. They also examine myths surrounding anger, such as the idea that it is not inherited, that anger always leads to aggression, the idea that people must be aggressive to get what they want, that venting anger is always desirable, and more. The program incorporates the use of multiple anger styles, diet, yoga, and music therapy, making it easy to follow and customizable based on an individual’s needs. Whether you are running a group therapy session or working to resolve your own anger, this revolutionary program will help you achieve positive and lasting results.

Depression written by Robert Canada and has been published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc. this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-01-11 with Religion categories.

The National Institute of Mental Health estimates sixteen million adults in the United States suffer from some form of depression. The World Health Organization estimates 350 million people in the world suffer from depression. Over thirty thousand suicides take place in America each year above sixty percent suffered from depression. The suicide epidemic has become the fourth leading cause of death among adults ages eighteen to sixty-five. This sermon topic seems to be overlooked by our pulpits today. There are millions of Christians within the 350 million suffering from depression. These brothers and sisters in Christ are suffering from something they cannot control. They awake each day to another day of dread, crying out to God for relief with none in sight. Lost in a dark, never ending tunnel, looking for a way out. No light, no hope, and no direction. There is a stigma attached to being a Christian suffering from depression because we believe this is not supposed to happen to real Christians. After all, aren't we to be content in all things? We are to put on the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness. How do we share our condition with other Christians who are void of understanding? We are not alone in our fight to drive this beast out of our lives. There are millions fighting this battle each day. Searching for the light at the end of the tunnel. The time has come to talk about depression in Christianity.

The Ethics Of Microaggression written by Regina Rini and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-10-29 with Philosophy categories.

Slips of the tongue, unwitting favoritism, and stereotyped assumptions are just some examples of microaggression. Nearly all of us commit microaggressions at some point, even if we don’t intend to. Yet over time a pattern of microaggression can cause considerable harm by reminding members of marginalized groups of their precarious position. The Ethics of Microaggression is a much needed and clearly written exploration of this pervasive yet complex problem. What is microaggression and how do we know when it is occurring? Can we be held responsible for microaggressions and if so, how? How has social media affected the problem? What role can philosophy play in understanding microaggression? Regina Rini explores these highly topical and controversial questions in an engaging and fair-minded way, arguing that an event is a microaggression precisely because it causes a marginalized person to experience an ambiguous encounter with oppression. She illustrates her argument with compelling examples from media, politics, and psychology and explains the significance of essential concepts, such as media representation, reparative renaming, and safe spaces. The Ethics of Microaggression explains what microaggression is and offers strategies for combating it. Assuming no prior knowledge of the topic or philosophy, it demystifies a controversial and extremely important topic in clear language. It is ideal for anyone coming to the topic for the first time and for students in philosophy, gender studies, race theory, disability theory, and social and political philosophy.
