Nyungcung Village, located at the foot of Mount Halimun Salak and adjacent to the Mount Halimun Salak National Park area, plays a crucial role in conserving forest areas. However, the village faces significant challenges due to its steep topography, with an average slope of 50% (45 degrees), making it susceptible to flooding and landslides. Therefore, effective land management practices must be implemented to ensure soil and water conservation and meet the community's food needs. The book "Assistance to Forest Farmers in the Rimba Lestari Farmers Group in Agroforestry of Coffee Plants on Sloping Land in Malasari Village, Nanggung Subdistrict" describes the efforts of UNB (Universitas Nusa Bangsa) and its partners to assist the community in Nyungcung Village. In collaboration with the Rimba Lestari Farmers Group (KT Rimba Lestari), they have organized activities to enhance the community's knowledge regarding terracing planting techniques and coffee cultivation. Additionally, they have assisted in providing seeds and coffee plant materials to establish Village Forests in Malasari Village. Furthermore, infrastructure for coffee plant agroforestry activities has been established to support the KT Rimba Lestari farmers. The book describes the project implementation, which encompasses three stages: planning, implementation, and evaluation/monitoring. Throughout these stages, the partners have achieved significant results. Firstly, there has been an average increase of 28% in public insight and knowledge regarding planting techniques on sloping land and coffee cultivation. This increase in knowledge empowers the community to adopt more sustainable and effective agricultural practices. Secondly, the project has contributed to improving facilities and infrastructure for cultivating land with an agroforestry system. These improved facilities not only enhance agricultural productivity but also have the potential to uplift the welfare of the local population. The integration of coffee cultivation with agroforestry systems provides multiple benefits, such as soil and water conservation, biodiversity preservation, and income diversification for farmers. Lastly, the book describes how the project has made a significant contribution to soil and water conservation efforts in the region. By implementing agroforestry practices and terracing techniques, the project helps mitigate erosion and improve water retention in the soil. These practices also have the potential to transform the area into a sustainable tourist destination, attracting visitors interested in ecotourism and showcasing the successful conservation efforts.

"A decade and a half ago, lush forests with evergreen fruitbearing rambutan trees surrounded the home of Leni, a 43-year-old Iban Dayak woman and mother of two, in Jagoi Babang district of West Kalimantan province--an area her Indigenous community has inhabited for centuries. Today, they have little land to farm and no forest in which to forage after the land was cleared to make way for an oil palm plantation run by an Indonesian company."--Publisher website, viewed October 15, 2019.

'This book provides an excellent overview of more than a decade of transformation in a forest landscape where the interests of local people, extractive industries and globally important biodiversity are in conflict. The studies assembled here teach us that plans and strategies are fine but, in the real world of the forest frontier, conservation must be based upon negotiation, social learning and an ability to muddle through.' Jeffrey Sayer, senior scientific adviser, Forest Conservation Programme IUCN - International Union for of Nature The devolution of control over the world's forests from national or state and provincial level governments to local control is an ongoing global trend that deeply affects all aspects of forest management, conservation of biodiversity, control over resources, wealth distribution and livelihoods. This powerful new book from leading experts provides an in-depth account of how trends towards increased local governance are shifting control over natural resource management from the state to local societies, and the implications of this control for social justice and the environment. The book is based on ten years of work by a team of researchers in Malinau, Indonesian Borneo, one of the world's richest forest areas. The first part of the book sets the larger context of decentralization's impact on power struggles between the state and society. The authors then cover in detail how the devolution process has occurred in Malinau, the policy context, struggles and conflicts and how Malinau has organized itself. The third part of the book looks at the broader issues of property relations, conflict, local governance and political participation associated with decentralization in Malinau. Importantly, it draws out the salient points for other international contexts including the important determination that 'local political alliances', especially among ethnic minorities, are taking on greater prominence and creating new opportunities to influence forest policy in the world's richest forests from the ground up. This is top-level research for academics and professionals working on forestry, natural resource management, policy and resource economics worldwide. Published with CIFOR

This paper reports on three regional assessments carried out to identify and draw lessons from on-the-ground initiatives in multiple-use forest management in the Amazon Basin, the Congo Basin and Southeast Asia. In all three regions, information was collected through interviews with country-based forestry experts, forest managers and technicians. A complementary, web-based questionnaire further examines the reasons for the successes and failures of multiple-use forests management initiatives.
