In Assumption, the follow-up to the wickedly funny I Am Not Sidney Poitier, Percival Everett is in top form as he once again upends our expectations about characters, plot, race, and meaning. Ogden Walker, deputy sheriff of a small New Mexico town, is on the trail of an old woman’s murderer. But at the crime scene, his are the only footprints leading up to and away from her door. Something is amiss, and even his mother knows it. As other cases pile up, Ogden gives chase, pursuing flimsy leads for even flimsier reasons. His hunt takes him from the seamier side of Denver to a hippie commune as he seeks the puzzling solution. A wild ride to the heart of a baffling mystery, Assumption is a literary thriller like no other from the author of Erasure, now an Oscar-nominated feature film. Part of the Picador Collection, a series celebrating fifty years of Picador books and showcasing the best of modern literature.

Genesis And The Power Of True Assumptions written by John C. Rankin and has been published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-08-09 with categories.

We all make assumptions, and the question is to what extent they are true or false. Also, how well do we test our assumptions? We know that 1+ 1 = 2 is an assumption (per Kurt Godel in his Incompleteness Theorems). Once assumed, all math works beautifully, and thus physics, engineering, architecture, music, art and other cognate sciences are possible. Yet, there is the greatest assumption to consider, stated in the opening words of Genesis: "In the beginning God created." In these pages we will look at a series of positive assumptions in Genesis 1-2 that interpret all the Bible and life. We will gain an overview of the whole Bible, looking at theology, issues of cultural and political conflict, and the deeper reality of spiritual conflict. Perhaps the three most powerful men in the Bible -- apart from Jesus as the Son of God and Son of Man -- are Moses, Daniel and Paul. They each reflect the deepest grasp of the written Word, they understand pagan religions and politics well, and they know the leading of the Holy Spirit with the signs and wonders that follow.

Contract As Assumption written by Brian Coote and has been published by Bloomsbury Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-04-02 with Law categories.

It has many times been said that contracts involve assumptions of obligation or liability, but what that means, and what it is that is assumed, have not often been discussed. It is to further such discussion that some of the author's previously published writings around this subject have been brought together in this book. His basic premises are that contractual obligation and liability in this context are two sides to the same coin and that an assumption of one is an assumption of both. Parties are bound not because liability has been imposed upon them by law as a result of their having entered into a contract but because, in the act of assuming, they have imposed it upon themselves. Contract provides a facility the purpose of which is to enable this to be done within the limits prescribed by law. The implication of these premises are much more significant than might be supposed when applied to such areas of contract as formation, consideration, intention to contract, exception clauses, privity and damages. The book concludes with a treatment of the role of assumption in tort. Because of the importance of its subject matter and its wide-ranging treatment, this book should appeal not only to teachers and postgraduate students of contract but also to practitioners in the field and to anyone else with an interest in contract theory.

The Assumptions Behind The Theory Of Evolution written by Dave A. Schoch and has been published by AuthorHouse this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011 with Evolution (Biology) categories.

The foundation of evolutionary theory consists solidly of numerous unwarranted and illegitimate assumptions, many of which are antagonistic to the facts of nature. These assumptions are taught to the public as codified facts of science, when they exist only as "what if's." The author addresses these issues as well as the philosophical roots of this scientific movement that push the theory along, keeping it "alive" by less than scientific means. He exposes the farce that a false philosophy - not science - keeps alive. Most of the arguments for Intelligent Design are covered as well as many more ID doesn't cover. The author also covers various "games" that evolutionary theorists like to play in their efforts to make evolutionary theory seem scientific. He covers "equivocation" (switching the meanings of words around to fit one's means to an end), especially the four different meanings of the word "evolution" utilized by evolutionists to confuse the issue. Before long, anyone caught up into a debate with an evolutionist must concede because of these perfidious tactics. According to one scientist, this is an "excellent book...It promises to be a very important book in this area (referring to the creation vs. evolution controversy)." Working With Assumptions In International Development Program Evaluation written by Apollo M. Nkwake and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-11-27 with Social Science categories.

This book discusses the crucial place that assumptions hold in conceptualizing, implementing, and evaluating development programs. It suggests simple ways for stakeholders and evaluators to 1) examine their assumptions about program theory and environmental conditions and 2) develop and carry out effective program monitoring and evaluation in light of those assumptions. A survey of evaluators from an international development agency reviewed the state of practice on assumptions-aware evaluation. This 2nd edition has been updated with further illustrations, case studies, and frameworks that have been researched and tested in the years since the first edition. Regardless of geography or goal, development programs and policies are fueled by a complex network of implicit ideas. Stakeholders may hold assumptions about purposes, outcomes, methodology, and the value of project evaluation and evaluators—which may or may not be shared by the evaluators. A major barrier to viable program evaluations is that development programs are based on assumptions that often are not well articulated. In designing programs, stakeholders often lack clear outlines for how implemented interventions will bring desired changes. This lack of clarity masks critical risks to program success and makes it challenging to evaluate such programs. Methods that have attempted to address this dilemma have been popularized as theory of change or other theory‐based approaches. Often, however, theory-based methods do not sufficiently clarify how program managers or evaluators should work with the assumptions inherent in the connections between the steps. The critical examination of assumptions in evaluation is essential for effective evaluations and evaluative thinking. "How does one think evaluatively? It all begins with assumptions. Systematically articulating, examining, and testing assumptions is the foundation of evaluative thinking... This book, more than any other, explains how to build a strong foundation for effective interventions and useful evaluation by rigorously working with assumptions." —Michael Quinn Patton, PhD. Author of Utilization-Focused Evaluation and co-editor of THOUGHTWORK: Thinking, Action, and the Fate of the World, USA. "This updated edition presents us with a new opportunity to delve into both the theoretical and practical aspects of paradigmatic, prescriptive, and causal assumptions. We need to learn, and apply these insights with the deep attention they deserve." —Zenda Ofir, PhD. Independent Evaluator, Richard von Weizsäcker Fellow, Robert Bosch Academy, Berlin, Germany. Honorary Professor, School of Public Leadership, Stellenbosch University, South Africa. “This thought-provoking book explains why assumptions are an essential condition within the theories and methodologies of evaluation; and how assumptions influence the ways that evaluators approach their work...It will enrich the ways that evaluators develop their models, devise their methodologies, interpret their data, and interact with their stakeholders.” —Jonny Morell, Ph.D., President, 4.669...
