A ciência nunca foi universal na sua aceitação, embora seja seguro dizer que, com os seus incontáveis adeptos no Oriente e o número cada vez maior dos seus defensores no Ocidente, não existe fé que tenha uma aplicação mais universal do que a crença na influência dos corpos celestes sobre os destinos dos seres humanos. Não é possível, dentro dos limites de um pequeno manual como este, considerar adequadamente o paradoxo filosófico que faz do livre arbítrio no homem uma “necessidade em jogo”; mas é óbvio que o conceito não é de todo anticientífico, visto que é costume falar do "caminho livre de vibração" nos átomos químicos enquanto ao mesmo tempo se sabe que estes átomos têm as suas características restritas, modos de movimento, etc., e estão todos sujeitos às leis gerais que regem os órgãos dos quais fazem parte integrante. Basta que, se pudermos traçar uma ligação real entre a disposição dos corpos celestes no momento do nascimento e a vida e o caráter conhecidos do indivíduo então nascido, e uma correspondência exata entre o curso dos acontecimentos naquela vida com o mudanças que ocorrem nos céus após o momento do nascimento, faremos bem em aceitar o fato pelo que vale e organizar nossas noções filosóficas de acordo. Já no ano 2154 AC, encontramos menção à grande importância atribuída aos fenómenos celestes nas mentes dos governantes chineses. Está registrado no Clássico Histórico da China que naquela época os astrólogos Hi e Ho negligenciaram seus deveres, de modo que quando, no dia 10 de outubro, ocorreu um grande eclipse do Sol em Pequim, entre sete e nove horas da manhã, manhã, as pessoas estavam totalmente despreparadas para isso e "corriam de um lado para outro na maior consternação". Por esta ofensa, Hi e Ho foram privados de seus cargos, suas propriedades foram confiscadas e eles foram expulsos do reino. Entre os hindus temos os escritores clássicos Garga, Parashara e Mihira, juntamente com as suas legiões de comentadores. Os registros assírios estão repletos de alusões astrológicas a respeito da influência das conjunções planetárias e das posições estelares. A mitologia grega nada mais é do que um vasto sistema de astrologia cosmográfica, e não há outra história nela além daquela que você pode ler nas constelações dos céus e na evolução correspondente da raça humana. Aristóteles fez disso parte de sua filosofia. Hiparco, Hipócrates, Tales, Galênio e outros subscreveram uma crença inteligente em seus princípios. No entanto, estamos em dívida com Cláudio Ptolomeu pela primeira declaração concisa e científica dos seus princípios e práticas, no que diz respeito à Europa.
