ARISTARCHUS, who flourished in the first half of the third century B.C., is chiefly known as the only philosopher or astronomer of antiquity who taught that the earth moves round the sun. This doctrine is, however, not mentioned in the only writing of his which has been preserved, and the little we know about it is derived from allusions to it made by subsequent writers. All the same, his little book, "On the Sizes and Distances of the Sun and Moon," is of great importance, and Sir Thomas Heath's new and critical edition, accompanied by a translation, commentary, and notes, is therefore a most welcome addition to the literature of astronomical history. Considering that the idea of the earth being in the centre of the universe reigned undisturbed until less than four hundred years ago, it is one of the most surprising facts in the history of astronomy that its motion round the sun should have been proposed more than 1700 years before the time of Copernicus, and that it should only have been accepted by one single philosopher, Seleukus, as to whom it is not even certain that he went the whole way and did not merely accept the daily rotation of the earth. The editor of this new edition of Aristarchus, therefore, thought it desirable to prepare a lengthy introduction to the work, giving an account of the progress of astronomy in Greece from the time of Thales to and including that of Aristarchus. Though this is not the first time that an English writer has dealt with this subject, Sir Thomas Heath has done good work by preparing this introductory memoir, which fills more than three hundred pages, as he possesses special qualifications for writing the history of Greek science, and there are various controversial matters which cannot be too much discussed-provided it is done by writers who are as competent to do so as he is. The author gives full references to the very copious literature on the subject; indeed, he even notices some statements which he might well have ignored, such as the comically exaggerated picture drawn by Gomperz, of how Demokritus seems to have anticipated out of his inner consciousness many modern discoveries. The passages in the works of ancient writers from which our knowledge of early Greek astronomy is derived are always given at full length in translation, which many readers who may not have access to the originals will find very convenient.... --Nature, Volume 91

In the credulous twaddle of an essay on the Lost Arts one may generally find the telescope ascribed to far antiquity. In place of evidence there is vague allusion of classical times or wild flights of fancy like one which argued from the Scriptural statement that Satan took up Christ into a high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the earth, that the Devil had a telescope—bad optics and worse theology. In point of fact there is not any indication that either in classical times, or in the black thousand years of hopeless ignorance that followed the fall of Roman civilization, was there any knowledge of optical instruments worth mentioning. The peoples that tended their flocks by night in the East alone kept alive the knowledge of astronomy, and very gradually, with the revival of learning, came the spirit of experiment that led to the invention of aids to man’s natural powers. The lineage of the telescope runs unmistakably back to spectacles, and these have an honorable history extending over more than six centuries to the early and fruitful days of the Renaissance. That their origin was in Italy near the end of the thirteenth century admits of little doubt. A Florentine manuscript letter of 1289 refers to “Those glasses they call spectacles, lately invented, to the great advantage of poor old men when their sight grows weak,” and in 1305 Giordano da Rivalto refers to them as dating back about twenty years. Finally, in the church of Santa Maria Maggiore in Florence lay buried Salvino d’Amarto degli Armati, (obiit 1317) under an epitaph, now disappeared, ascribing to him the invention of spectacles. W. B. Carpenter, F. R. S., states that the inventor tried to keep the valuable secret to himself, but it was discovered and published before his death. At all events the discovery moved swiftly. By the early fourteenth century it had spread to the Low Countries where it was destined to lead to great results, and presently was common knowledge over all civilized Europe. It was three hundred years, however, between spectacles and the combination of spectacle lenses into a telescope, a lapse of time which to some investigators has seemed altogether mysterious. The ophthalmological facts lead to a simple explanation. The first spectacles were for the relief of presbyopia, the common and lamentable affection of advancing years, and for this purpose convex lenses of very moderate power sufficed, nor was material variation in power necessary. Glasses having a uniform focus of a foot and a half or thereabouts would serve every practical purpose, but would be no material for telescopes.

THE sublimest visible objects of human contemplation are the Starry Heavens. The beholder is awed at every thoughtful look upon them. And when viewed in the light of astronomical science the mind is overwhelmed and lost amid the vastness and magnificence of worlds and systems which roll and shine above, around and beneath us. The Sun. The most conspicuous, to us, of these wonderful orbs is the Sun. Seemingly, it is not as large as the wheel of a wagon, but when we learn that we see it only at the distance of more than ninety-one millions of miles, and consider how the apparent size of objects diminishes in proportion to their remoteness, we justly conclude that it must be of enormous magnitude to be'so conspicuous across a gulf so vast. Our earth is a large body; it takes long and toilsome journeying for a man to make his way around it. But the Sun fills more than a million times the cubic space filled by the earth. A railway-train running thirty miles an hour, and " never stopping, could not go around it in less than eleven years, nor run the distance from the earth to the Sun in less than three hundred and sixty years. If we were to take a string long enough to reach the moon, and draw a circle with it at its utmost stretch, the Sun would still be six times larger than that circle.
