Los textos de Navarro, Figueroa y Ruiz Lozano que conforman esta edición demuestran que los cielos peruanos estuvieron presentes en las discusiones sobre medicina y astronomía en el virreinato, dentro de un proceso sinuoso que comenzó con la creencia en la magia y terminó con la discusión sobre el pensamiento escolástico y la aproximación a los problemas que planteaba la revolución científica. El Perú no solo fue receptor de ideas científicas europeas, sino que estas se "domesticaron" o "americanizaron", de manera que su circulación fue un encuentro de carácter cultural. La observación de los astros y su influencia sobre los hombres fue un tema central en las reflexiones de los científicos y políticos peruanos de los siglos XVI y XVII. Tal es el caso de la astrología patriótica del siglo XVII, que tuvo como escenario las tensiones entre criollos y peninsulares. Mientras los primeros sustentaron que tenían derecho a gobernar por haber nacido en el Perú, los peninsulares sostenían que precisamente por ello los americanos no podían acceder al poder. Estas ideas se abandonaron poco después y se aceptó que un mismo cielo envolvía a todos los habitantes del planeta. Sin embargo, no se abandonó la idea de la influencia estelar, que confluyó con la astronomía y la astrología política, y coexistió con la astrología médica, duramente criticada por algunos.

In 1719, a deadly and highly contagious disease took hold of the Imperial Villa of Potosí, a silver mining metropolis in what is now Bolivia. Within a year, the pathogen had killed some 22,000 people, just over a third of the city’s residents. Victims collapsed with fever, body aches, and effusions of blood from the nose and mouth. Most died within days. The great Andean pandemic of 1717–22 was likely the most destructive disease to strike South America since the days of the Spanish conquest. Pandemic in Potosí features the single longest narrative of this nearly forgotten period, penned by local historian Bartolomé Arzáns de Orsúa y Vela, along with shorter treatments of the disease’s ravages in Cuzco, Arequipa, and the outskirts of Lima. The “Gran Peste,” as it was called, was a pivotal event about which Arzáns wrote at length because he lived through it, but also because it was believed to have cosmic significance. Kris Lane translates and contextualizes Arzáns’s account, which is rich in local detail that sheds light on a range of topics—from therapeutics, devotional life, class relations, gender, and race to conceptions of illness, sin, and human will and responsibility during a major public health crisis. Original narratives of the pandemic, translated here for the first time, help readers see commonalities and differences between past and present disease encounters. En este texto se describen y analizan las circunstancias que provocaron el traslado del Real Hospital de San Lázaro del centro de la ciudad de Cartagena de Indias a una isla cercana llamada Tierra Bomba, en el sitio conocido como Caño de Loro; las gestiones para el desplazamiento se inician en 1759 y terminan, más de treinta años después, en 1790. La reubicación se realizó en el marco de la política hospitalaria propuesta por el reformismo borbónico que generó múltiples proyectos por parte de las autoridades metropolitanas, virreinales y locales relacionados con el funcionamiento, las rentas, la ocupación de los espacios, la construcción y la ubicación de estas instituciones. El escrito también se detiene en la presentación y explicación del proyecto de arquitectura hospitalaria expuesto por el ingeniero militar Antonio de Arévalo con el fin de dar una estructura adecuada a la institución, aspecto nada conocido de la historia neogranadina. A pesar de que en el estudio prima una narrativa administrativa y procedimental, relacionada con trámites y discusiones de diversa índole sobre el hospital, el proceso de traslado pone en evidencia la forma en que distintos grupos de la sociedad percibían la enfermedad, las creencias que prevalecían sobre su origen, cómo pensaban que debían enfrentarla y muestra asimismo algunos aspectos de la vida de los enfermos en el hospital durante esa época.
