We present a preliminary study from Fermilab experiment E791 of[Lambda][sup 0]/[anti[Lambda]][sup 0], [Xi][sup -]/[Xi][sup+] and[Omega][sup -]/[Omega][sup+] production asymmetries from[pi][sup -] nucleus interactions at 500 Gev/c. The production asymmetries for these particles are studied as a function of x[sub F] and p[sup 2][sub T]. We observed an asymmetry in the target fragmentation region for[Lambda][sup 0]'s larger than that for[Xi]'s, suggesting diquark effects. The asymmetry for[Omega]'s is significatively smaller than for the other two hyperons consistent with the fact that[Omega]'s do not share valence quarks with either the pion or the target particle. In the beam fragmentation region, the asymmetry tends to 0.1 for both[Lambda][sup 0]'s and[Xi]'s. The asymmetries vs p[sup 2][sub T] are approximately constant for the three strange baryons under study.

We present the first measurement of the atomic mass dependence of central xi -- and X & d1;+ production. It is measured using a sample of 22,459 xi-- 's and X & d1;+ 's produced in collisions between a 250 GeV/c pi-- beam and targets of beryllium, aluminum, copper, and tungsten. The relative cross sections are fit to the two parameter function sigma0 Aalpha, where A is the atomic mass. We measure alpha = 0.924 +/- 0.020 +/- 0.025, for Feynman- x in the range --0.09

Combined cross section times branching fraction limits are given for[Sigma][sub c][sup+][sup+][r-arrow][Lambda][sub c][sup+][pi][sup+] and[Sigma][sub c][sup 0][r-arrow][Lambda][sub c][sup+][pi][sup[minus]] where[Lambda][sub c][sup+][r-arrow][Sigma][sub s][sup[plus-minus]][pi][sup[plus-minus]][pi][sup+]. The[Lambda][sub c][sup+] is reconstructed with partial information on the[Sigma][sub s]; the missing[Sigma][sub s] momentum is established through momentum conservation imposed by a constrained fit. The data are of[pi][sup[minus]] beam interactions at 250 GeV from Fermilab experiment E769.

Asymmetries in the hadroproduction of charm particles directly probe power corrections to the QCD factorization theorems. In this paper, the heavy-quark recombination mechanism, a power correction that explains charm meson asymmetries, is extended to charm baryons. In this mechanism, a light quark participates in the hard scattering that creates a charm quark and they hadronize together into a charm baryon. This provides a natural and economical explanation for the [Lambda]{sub c}/[Lambda]{sub c}− asymmetries measured in piN and pN collisions.

The cross sections for the production of [pi]°, K{sub s}°, [Lambda] and {bar {Lambda}} are derived and compared with those produced in other reactions as functions of the energy. The average number of [pi]° produced per collision is the same as in 100 GeV/c pp reactions.

Fermilab Experiment 769 used a charge-selected, hadron beam of mean energy 250 GeV/c, composed of pions, kaons, and protons, impinging on beryllium, aluminum, copper and tungsten targets. Using a sample of approximately 4000[Xi][sub s][sup[minus]][yields][Lambda][sup 0][pi][sup[minus]] decays, measurements of the charm baryon forward cross sections times branching ratio[pi][sup[+-]]N[yields][Xi][sub c][sup+]X and[pi][sup[+-]]N[yields][Xi][sub c][sup 0]X are presented. Upper limits on[alpha] x BR are also determined for the states[Xi][sub c][sup+][yields][Xi][sub s][sup[minus]][pi][sup+][pi][sup+] and[Xi][sub c][sup 0][yields][Xi][sub s][sup[minus]][pi][sup+] produced in (p, [pi][sup+], [pi][sup[minus]], K[sup+], K[sup[minus]])-nucleon interactions.
