The German-Egyptian "Asyut Project" has been working in the Gebel Asyut al-gharbi, the Asyut necropolis in middle Egypt since 2003. One of the most studied tombs is that of prince Iti-ibi, ruler of the city at around 2040 BC. His tomb is considered to be one of the largest of the First Intermediate Period in Egypt. It has been repeatedly re-used, raided or used for storage space by early archaeologists. Despite, or rather thanks to, its unhappy history, the tomb contained many findings from the First Intermediate to the Early Modern Period, the first part of which is presented in this study: amulets, glass, wooden models, mollusks, clay offering plates and Ushabtis. These collections provide the first systematic insight into the specific regional characteristics of Asyut culture.

The fruit of fifteen years' research, this new book documents the 600 votive stelae and other objects discovered in 1922 in the Salakhana tomb on the Western Mountain of Asyut in Middle Egypt. The tomb belonged to Djefaihapy III, monarch of Asyut during the XIIth Dynasty, and was later used either as a shrine for votive offerings or as a depository for them. The stelae and figurines of the Salakhana trove date from early Dynasty XVIII to the Late Period, most of them falling within the Ramesside period. They provide a unique record of personal life and religion in Asyut during this period and represent a cross-section of society in that city. Donors came from almost all social strata and include, unusually, a number of women who dedicated stelae on their own initiative. The Salakhana stelae provide entirely new information on private worship in Middle Egypt.

In Greco-Roman Egypt, recipes for magical undertaking, called magical formularies, commonly existed for love potions, curses, attempts to best business rivals—many of the same challenges that modern people might face. In The Greco-Egyptian Magical Formularies: Libraries, Books, and Individual Recipes, volume editors Christopher Faraone and Sofia Torallas Tovar present a series of essays by scholars involved in a multiyear project to reedit and translate the various magical handbooks that were inscribed in the Roman period in the Greek or Egyptian languages. For the first time, the material remains of these papyrus rolls and codices are closely examined, revealing important information about the production of books in Egypt, the scribal culture in which they were produced, and the traffic in single recipes copied from them. Especially important for historians of the book and the Christian Bible are new insights in the historical shift from roll to codex, complicated methods of inscribing the bilingual papyri (in which the Greek script is written left to right and the demotic script right to left), and the new realization that several of the longest extant handbooks are clearly compilations of two or more shorter handbooks, which may have come from different places. The essays also reexamine and rethink the idea that these handbooks came from the personal libraries of practicing magicians or temple scriptoria, in one case going so far as to suggest that two of the handbooks had literary pretensions of a sort and were designed to be read for pleasure rather than for quotidian use in making magical recipes.

Ancient Egyptian religion is immensely complex in its symbolism and in its intellectual and artistic depth. From the early times, certain animals, such as the cow, the falcon, and the snake, were closely associated with religion and with kingship. These animals are among the many embodiments of maginal power. This volume looks at the Egyptian attitude to animals, the jackal deities and their relationships, and the Salakhana stelae

The Tomb Of Three Foreign Wives Of Tuthmosis Iii written by Christine Lilyquist and has been published by Metropolitan Museum of Art this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2003 with Art objects, Egyptian categories.

This book results from a collaborative effort to reconstruct the 15th-century BC tomb of three foreign wives of Tuthmosis III, discovered and robbed by villagers near Luxor in 1916. A general account was published by Herbert Winlock in 1948 (The Treasure of Three Egyptian Princesses, New York, The Metropolitan Museum of Art). The present volume differs substantially in the type and extent of documentation provided and in interpretation. Verification is provided of tomb provenance for a number of objects, for example, while other objects previously thought to have come from the tomb are now considered forgeries. The text explores and documents the location of the tomb in the southwest valleys at Thebes; field work conducted by The Metropolitan Museum of Art at the site in 1988; art market finds alleged to have come from the tomb; and the names of the foreign wives and the life they might have led.

This volume offers new research on an essential but often controversial aspect of life in Dynastic Egypt. Its originality lies in combining research which uses Egyptology's traditional strengths, philological and iconographic, with reflections on material culture and on the discipline of Egyptology itself. The authors are internationally-recognized authorities in their fields.
