Homes and housing are an essential part of everyday life, but we rarely stop to think about what they mean to us. In this vigorous exploration of the idea of 'home' in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, a series of experts examine the house as a place of emotional intimacy, a physical structure and an institution. Combining detailed historical research and social analysis, this fascinating work uncovers the rich mine of ideas and associations – work, leisure, style, and even the creation of a national culture – contained within the humble home. Contributors include Ian Lochhead, Margaret Tennant, Charlotte Macdonald, Anna K.C. Petersen, Helen M. Leach, Lawrence Jones, Penny Isaac, Erik Olssen, Ben Schrader, Julia Gatley, Robin Skinner, Louise Shaw, Xanthe Howes, Paul Walker, and Justine Clark

Taking the first decade of the twentieth century as its starting point, At Home joins the story of the New Zealand house just at the point when its inhabitants begin to ask whether a distinctive, uniquely New Zealand house might be possible. It then charts the way in which imported movements, fashions and styles in twentieth-century architecture and design were adopted, or adapted, by New Zealanders to create a house environment whether international in its style or an attempt at something more distinctly local. At Home goes behind the scenes of architectural history to look at the way 20th century New Zealanders lived in environments created for them by architects, designers and craftspeople united in the pursuit of the contemporary New Zealand home.

We Call It Home written by Ben Schrader and has been published by Raupo this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2005 with Public housing categories.

We Call It Home begins in the 19th century, when the private sector failed to provide affordable housing for the poor. This led the Liberal government to build the first state houses in 1905: workers' dwellings. It moves on to examine the state house styles -- the archetypal state house of the first Labour Government is well known, but this wasn't the only kind of state house. Schrader asks why the government seemed so keen on housing nuclear families at the expense of other family groups, and through his interviews finds out who did the chores, what they ate, and what they did together, and charts the changing structure of state house families. Finally, Schrader looks at the changing public perceptions of state housing. In the 1930s securing a state house was viewed as a 'step up', but by the 1970s it had come to be seen as a 'step down'. Why the change? It is the author's hope that We Call It Home " ... will give readers a greater understanding of the ways in which state housing has affected the lives of generations of Kiwis, and of the important role it has played in shaping New Zealand society."

Calling The Station Home written by Michèle D. Dominy and has been published by Rowman & Littlefield this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2001 with Social Science categories.

Combining historical, literary and ethnographic approaches, Calling the Station Home draws a fine-grained portrait of New Zealand high-country farm families whose material culture, social arrangements, geographic knowledge, and linguistic practices reveal the ways in which the social production of space and the spatial construction of society are mutually constituted. The book speaks directly to national and international debates about cultural legitimacy, indigenous land claims, and environmental resource management by highlighting settler-descendant expressions of belonging and indigeneity in the white British diaspora.
