Excerpt from At the Sign of the Hobby Horse I gallop, fventre-k-terre, straight across country. There may be high hedges of tradition, or ticklish ditches of error, in this wild path, but owning none but true-bred hunting hobbies, at a touch of the heel they clear fences without flicking a rail, and take off cleanly from crumbling banks, and we hardly pause in our stride until we arrive breathless and triumphant at nowhere in particular. Excerpt from Some Hobby Horses The favourite Hobby Horse is generally dignified by the name of a collection. I, myself, am one of a large family, and I should be sorry to say how many varieties of things we did not collect in the house, in the garden, and, above all, in the shrubberies which surrounded my old home. Excerpt from The Story of Captain: The Horse With the Human Brain In giving the answers he pawed with one of his front feet, but at the request of his master would give a portion of the answer with one foot, and the remainder with another, even alternating in his use of his hind feet. A number of simple commands were now given, and ques tions asked to which the horse responded with a shake of the head for No, or a nod for Yes. He would take a seat when requested, scratch his head with right or left hindfoot, Show either right or left foot when required, or stamp with right or left foot when required, or stamp with right or left hindfoot as asked. When told to pump water he would swing his head up and down continuously, and he would swing his head to right and left as commanded. When asked to laugh he opened his mouth and showed his teeth, and he wiggled his ears with equal readiness. When told to put out his tongue it came out immediately, and when commanded to make a hobby-horse of himself he planted his hindfeet firmly and then proceeded to stretch himself by planting his forefeet as far ahead as he could. He was then required to make a corkscrew of himself, and placing all four feet together, moved around in corkscrew motion. At the command: Reverse! He immediately went in the opposite direction. Then came an exhibition of Captain's recognition of colors. A rack containing ten or fifteen colored cloths was placed before the audience. The horse was asked to go and pick out, say, the third lady in the second row, look at the color of her hat (or shawl, dress, gloves or other article of apparel), and then take up the cloth from the rack which corresponded to the color of the article worn. In this he seldom made mistakes. Now a blindfold exhibition was given. As his master ex plained, this fully precluded the possibility of any collusion at least as far as Captain's seeing any signal was concerned. The blindfold was a leather mask, held in place by the ears and a supporting and fastening strap, the leather completely cover ing the eyes. Excerpt from Greek Prose Composition Part I contains, in graded lessons, the principal points of Greek syntax, the unusual and non-essential being purposely omitted. These lessons are designed for use at the beginning of the second year's study of Greek, thereby serving as a partial review of the first year's work and as an introduction to the composition work in connection with the reading of Xenophon's Anabasis. Part II contains short, simple English sentences, based on Books I - IV of the Anabasis. These should be used daily in connection with the reading of the text. Part III contains connected English prose, based on Books I - IV of the Anabasis. This is carefully graded, so that the stu dent who performs faithfully the work outlined here will be able to pass the entrance examination of any of the American colleges. The method of writing Greek at sight used in this book needs a word of explanation. It is the outgrowth of the author's personal experience in the classroom, and his belief that the best results can be obtained only by systematic practice in connection with the regular work. Excerpt from A Book of Cambridge Verse Nevertheless, after all deductions have been made, how much true poetry is yet left! He must be hard to please who cannot find intense enjoyment in the Eclogues of Phineas Fletcher, in Cowley's epitaph on Harvey, in the Miltonic stanzas of Gray's Installation Ode, in a score of other pieces, grave, quaint, or classical in their allusive ness of phrasing. Especially grateful must we be to the number of poets, of exquisite feeling and easy mastery of form, who during the last fifty or sixty years have enriched the language with delicate and elegant verse, from which it has been only too difficult to choose because its quantity is so great and its merit so even. Of this we trust we have given a tolerably adequate selection but it would have been easy to multiply it fourfold. Excerpt from Riding and Driving Horses: Their Breeding and Rearing For many years the subjects dealt with in this Address have interested me deeply. Twelve months ago I made application to Mr. Druce, the Secretary of this Club, to make this address, but was unfortunately too late, all arrangements for 1884 having been then made. Very many causes have been assigned for the decline of horse-breeding. It will be noticed that I accept one more particularly, to wit, the failure in per severing to raise animals of size, quality, and value. The principal Object which I have in View, therefore, is to make our shortcomings in this respect more gene rally known, and to offer suggestions for breeding horses of greater size, as they will always command a ready sale at prices remunerative to the breeder.
