SAINT ATHANASIUS OF ALEXANDRIA COLLECTION [5 BOOKS] — Quality Formatting and Value — Active Index, Multiple Table of Contents for all Books — Multiple Illustrations Saint Athanasius of Alexandria, also called Athanasius the Great, Athanasius the Confessor or, primarily in the Coptic Orthodox Church, Athanasius the Apostolic, was the twentieth bishop of Alexandria (as Athanasius I). His episcopate lasted 45 years (c. 8 June 328 – 2 May 373), of which over 17 were spent in five exiles ordered by four different Roman emperors. Athanasius is a renowned Christian theologian, a Church Father, the chief defender of Trinitarianism against Arianism, and a noted Egyptian leader of the fourth century. Conflict with Arius and Arianism as well as successive Roman emperors shaped Athanasius's career. In 325, at the age of 27, Athanasius began his leading role against the Arians as a deacon and assistant to Bishop Alexander of Alexandria during the First Council of Nicaea. Roman emperor Constantine the Great had convened the council in May–August 325 to address the Arian position that the Son of God, Jesus of Nazareth, is of a distinct substance from the Father. Three years after that council, Athanasius succeeded his mentor as archbishop of Alexandria. In addition to the conflict with the Arians, he struggled against the Emperors Constantine, Constantius II, Julian the Apostate and Valens. Athanasius stood contra mundum ("against the world") in defense of the biblical doctrine of Christ. He opposed Arius when it seemed all the world would follow Arius's heresy. Athanasius's work remains even today one of the definitive statements of orthodox Trinitarianism.

Saint Athanasius is a classic religious biography by Frances Alice Forbes. Saint Athanasius of Alexandria (c. 296-298 - 2 May 373), also called Athanasius the Great, Athanasius the Confessor or, primarily in the Coptic Orthodox Church, Athanasius the Apostolic, was the 20th bishop of Alexandria (as Athanasius I). His episcopate lasted 45 years (c. 8 June 328 - 2 May 373), of which over 17 were spent in five exiles ordered by four different Roman emperors. Athanasius was a Christian theologian, a Church Father, the chief defender of Trinitarianism against Arianism, and a noted Egyptian leader of the fourth century. Conflict with Arius and Arianism as well as successive Roman emperors shaped Athanasius' career. In 325, at the age of 27, Saint Athanasius began his leading role against the Arians as a deacon and assistant to Bishop Alexander of Alexandria during the First Council of Nicaea. Roman emperor Constantine the Great had convened the council in May-August 325 to address the Arian position that the Son of God, Jesus of Nazareth, is of a distinct substance from the Father.[2] Three years after that council, Athanasius succeeded his mentor as archbishop of Alexandria. In addition to the conflict with the Arians (including powerful and influential Arian churchmen led by Eusebius of Nicomedia), he struggled against the Emperors Constantine, Constantius II, Julian the Apostate and Valens. He was known as Athanasius Contra Mundum (Latin for Athanasius Against the World). Nonetheless, within a few years after his death, Gregory of Nazianzus called him the "Pillar of the Church." His writings were well regarded by all following Church fathers in the West and the East, who noted their rich devotion to the Word-become-man, great pastoral concern and profound interest in monasticism. Athanasius is counted as one of the four great Eastern Doctors of the Church in the Roman Catholic Church.[3] In the Eastern Orthodox Church, he is labeled as the "Father of Orthodoxy." Some Protestants label him as "Father of the Canon." Saint Athanasius is venerated as a Christian saint, whose feast day is 2 May in Western Christianity, 15 May in the Coptic Orthodox Church, and 18 January in the other Eastern Orthodox Churches. He is venerated by the Oriental and Eastern Orthodox Churches, the Roman Catholic Church, the Lutherans, and the Anglican Communion. Saint Athanasius was born to a Christian family in the city of Alexandria[4] or possibly the nearby Nile Delta town of Damanhur sometime between the years 293 and 298. The earlier date is sometimes assigned due to the maturity revealed in his two earliest treatises Contra Gentes (Against the Heathens) and De Incarnatione (On the Incarnation), which were admittedly written about the year 318 before Arianism had begun to make itself felt, as those writings do not show an awareness of Arianism.[1] However Cornelius Clifford places his birth no earlier than 296 and no later than 298, based on the fact that Athanasius indicates no first hand recollection of the Maximian persecution of 303, which he suggests Athanasius would have remembered if he had been ten years old at the time. Secondly, the Festal Epistles state that the Arians had accused Athanasius, among other charges, of not having yet attained the canonical age (30) and thus could not have been properly ordained as Patriarch of Alexandria in 328. The accusation must have seemed plausible. The Orthodox Church places his year of birth around 297.

Eight of the most important writings and tracts of Saint Athanasius of Alexandria are published here complete. Born at the end of the 3rd Century, Athanasius of Alexandria served as the twentieth bishop of Alexandria; city of utmost importance to the early Christians. At the time Athanasius was born, the Roman Empire had not yet converted to the Christian creed and was actively suppressing the faith by persecuting clandestine groups of Christians living and practicing their beliefs throughout its dominion. As Athanasius came of age however, the Emperor Constantine proclaimed the Edict of Milan. This gave Christians a legal status in the Empire, and formally ordered a conclusion to the persecutions. Despite the decreed cessation however, hostilities between distinct groups of Christians - the Arians and the Trinitarian Christians - would characterize Athanasius's life in the priesthood. Amid an atmosphere of political and religious upheaval, Athanasius trod a delicate line: nicknamed Athanasius Contra Mundum (Athanasius Against the World), he would attempt to negotiate and parley along the lines of the faith. Renowned for his measured, diplomatic approach to his office of bishop, Athanasius's writings display his careful consideration. Respect, even among those who disagreed with his spiritual views, was widespread and he was praised by those who succeeded him. This book represents a collection of eight works by Athanasius. The Epistles he delivered against the beliefs of the Arians, and the communiques he issued in response to enactments by the church, are present. Athanasius would write several letters to other, local bishops situated in Egypt, Libya and elsewhere in an effort to promote understanding and unity among his fellow Christians. All of these writings offer an evocative impression of the nascent Christianity as it grew into an organized and accepted religion. The final work in this collection is The History of the Arians, a lengthy tract which outlines the various persecutions that the Arians suffered. Rome's brutality towards the Arian practitioners continued under Constantine's rule, and was present in many of the cities and towns under Roman rule, and Athanasius catalogs this violence in detail. This edition of Athanasius's tracts is annotated by the celebrated priest and theologian John Henry Newman. Newman, a learned scholar familiar with the era, explains the context for each work, thus allowing the reader to better understand Athanasius's writings.

Athanasius was born in the later half of AD 299 and died in AD 373. During this time, in 325, one of the most important Church meetings in history took place (second probably only to the Jerusalem Council). Convened by Constantine, the Council of Nicaea's primary task was seeking unity in all Christendom on the nature of the person of Jesus and his relation to the Father. While we mostly take it for granted today, most of what is now considered orthodox Christian doctrine were once items up for debate. At the council of Nicaea there were two views on the person of Christ being debated. The first was that of Arius, who believed that the Son was a created creature, albeit the first created, and not God. This makes sense if Jesus is “the Son” he must then come after the father. Colossians calls him the “firstborn of all creation.” Arius argued that the Son was created from nothing and then he was the creator of all other things. This made him a finite being as well as a being capable of wrong. The second view, and the one the council decided on, was that of St. Alexander, Bishop of Alexandria. Alexander argued that the Father's attributes are eternal, even his fatherhood and so he has always had the Son with him. Technically, he said the son was “begotten” and not created. Begotten of the same substance as the Father. This meant he was God and equal with the Father.Alexander had assistants at the council, the most notable of which was a 26 year old deacon by the name of Athanasius. Athanasius would spend the rest of his life fighting the Arian heresy. He did this most notably through his work On the Incarntion. On the Incarnation is the second half of a two part treatise and in it Athanasius covers creation, the fall, and the incarnation and resurrection as well as some refutations to common objections from Jews and Greeks regarding the Son, or as he calls him, the “God Word.”
