Mente enciclopedica e geniale, interessato a tutti i rami dello scibile, Athanasius Kircher nacque in Germania il 12 maggio 1602. Entrato nella Compagnia di Gesù, insegnò matematica e lingue orientali, prima in Germania poi in Francia. Chiamato a Roma da Urbano VIII nel 1633 per insegnare matematica al Collegio Romano, trascorse qui la maggior parte della sua vita e rappresentò per quasi cinquant'anni la maggiore autorità culturale della cattolicità. Fu in corrispondenza con gli uomini più colti del suo tempo e con i Gesuiti delle missioni orientali. Il presente volume comprende una prima parte con cenni biografici e un attento esame del suo pensiero filosofico e scientifico, ma soprattutto alchemico, di Anna Maria Partini. La seconda consiste nella traduzione di brani scelti del Kircher. Il Kircher si interessò di fisica, chimica, matematica, filosofia, astronomia, storia naturale, musica, e cercò, attraverso i suoi studi sui geroglifici, di riportare alla luce la tradizione ermetica. Seguace di Marsilio Ficino, scrisse numerose opere di ermetismo religioso e fece parte del famoso cenacolo alchemico che si riuniva intorno la Regina Cristina di Svezia. Qui conobbe e frequentò, tra gli altri, gli alchimisti Francesco Maria Santinelli, nobile di Pesaro, autore della Lux Obnubilata, e il marchese Massimiliano Palombara, autore della Bugia, le cui personalità ermetiche sono state messe in luce dalla stessa curatrice (A.M. Partini) in due scritti pubblicati in questa stessa collana. Anche questa volta dallo studio attento della curatrice è emerso il punto di vista alchemico di Kircher che oscilla tra l'"archimia" (Vera Chimica) e l'Alchimia spirituale. Nell'Oedipus Aegyptiacus, forse l'opera sua più nota dove parla anche degli Obelischi e della Mensa Isiaca, avvicina le varie fasi del processo alchemico al mito di Osiride, Iside e Horo. Interessanti sono le sue osservazioni sullo "solfo fisso", termine poco usato nella simbologia alchemica, Tintura che trasforma la Luna in Sole; Solfo che va poi volatilizzato per convertire in Sole (corporizzare lo spirito e spiritualizzare il corpo). Leggendo quindi attentamente tra le righe gli scritti del Kircher si possono scoprire i segreti più occulti su cui bisogna osservare il silenzio, com'è indicato dalla figura di Arpocrate (dio del silenzio), che s'intravede all'ombra di un cartiglio retto da Mercurio nel frontespizio di una delle sue opere più suggestive, l'Obeliscus Pamphilius.

Despite fragmentation, heterogeneity and the continuous pressure of the Ottoman Empire, early modern “divided Hungary” witnessed a surprising cultural flourishing in the sixteenth century, and maintained its common cultural identity in the seventeenth century. This could hardly have been possible without intense exchange with the rest of Europe. This three-volume series about early modern Hungary divided by Ottoman presence approaches themes of exchange of information and knowledge from two perspectives, namely, exchange through traditional channels provided by religious/educational institutions and the system of European study tours (Volume 1 – Study Tours and Intellectual-Religious Relationships), and the less regular channels and improvised networks of political diplomacy (Volume 2 – Diplomacy, Information Flow and Cultural Exchange). A by-product of this exchange of information was the changing image of early modern Hungary and Transylvania, which is presented in the third and in some aspects concluding volume of essays (Volume 3 – The Making and Uses of the Image of Hungary and Transylvania). Unlike earlier approaches to the same questions, these volumes draw an alternative map of early modern Hungary. On this map, the centre-periphery conceptions of European early modern culture are replaced by new narratives written from the perspective of historical actors, and the dominance of Western-Hungarian relationships is kept in balance due to the significance of Hungary’s direct neighbours, most importantly the Ottoman Empire.

There is no place on earth that does not echo with the near or distant sounds of human activity. More than half of humanity lives in cities, meaning the daily soundtrack of our lives is filled with sound—whether it be sonorous, harmonious, melodic, syncopated, discordant, cacophonous, or even screeching. This new anthology aims to explore how humans are placed in certain affective attitudes and dispositions by the music, sounds, and noises that envelop us. ?Sound and Affect maps a new territory for inquiry at the intersection of music, philosophy, affect theory, and sound studies. Long neglected in the history of Renaissance and early modern Europe, in recent years scholars have revised received understanding of the political and economic significance of the city of Naples and its rich artistic, musical and political culture. Its importance in the history of science, however, has remained relatively unknown. The Science of Naples provides the first dedicated study of Neapolitan scientific culture in the English language. Drawing on contributions from leading experts in the field, this volume presents a series of studies that demonstrate Neapolitans’ manifold contributions to European scientific culture in the early modern period and considers the importance of the city, its institutions and surrounding territories for the production of new knowledge. Individual chapters demonstrate the extent to which Neapolitan scholars and academies contributed to debates within the Republic of Letters that continued until deep into the nineteenth century. They also show how studies of Neapolitan natural disasters yielded unique insights that contributed to the development of fields such as medicine and earth sciences.
